SUMMARY:Jazz: Martin and Andy Play The Real Book
DESCRIPTION:To launch the 26/27 season\, we start with the front-line pairing of saxophonist Martin Kern and trumpeter Andy Hague. For tonight’s gig\, they will be ditching the printed arrangements and playing a selection of standards and Blue Note era classics they both know from memory\, in homage to the famous Real Books. For the non-players out there\, the Real Books are collections of jazz tunes used for repertoire by many jazz musicians since the early 1980s. \nMartin Kern grew up in Bülach near Zürich in Switzerland and later studied in Paris at the Cèntre d´’Information Musicale and at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern before spending some time in New York. He then moved to Berlin where he became a part oft he vibrant jazz scene. It was there that he recorded his first albums as a bandleader\, “Visions” and “Now Is The Music”. He later moved to Vienna where he recorded his most recent CD “Live At The ORF”\, a live radio concert at the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. Martin’s music is a striking blend of bebop\, hard bop and contemporary jazz\, his sound reflecting those of legendary saxophonists Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon and others. \nPianist Tom Berge is a graduate of Leeds College and besides being incredibly busy with live jazz gigs is building a career as a composer\, having written music for the BBC\, Sky\, ITV and other production companies. \nWill Harris holds a Masters in jazz bass from the Royal Academy\, but is also a medical doctor. We’ve seen a little less of drummer Ryan Thrupp recently since he is now based in London\, so great to have him back for this opening gig. \n \nBristol jazz saxophonist Martin Kern – www.martinkernmusic.com \n  \n25% off your food bill when you reserve a table in our  bar /restaurant\nWhen you book a table and enjoy dinner in our restaurant\, we reserve great seats for you\, ready for the performance\, so you can skip the queue and relax while enjoying your meal. \n\nPlease make your dinner reservation under the same name you used to book your tickets. \n\n*Does not include a ticket to your chosen event. SUMMARY:Jazz: From A to Z – The music of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims
DESCRIPTION:Al Cohn and Zoot Sims were one of the great tenor sax partnerships in jazz. In a series of albums beginning in the late fifties\, along with regular spots at the Half Note in New York\, they developed a quintet sound based on a joyful approach to performing\, rooted in swing\, informed by bebop and growing from their experiences together in the Woody Herman band. Al Cohn’s arrangements are super hip and not performed all that often. They often create the feeling of a ‘mini-big band’\, with driving swing and tight ensemble playing\, along with space for the soloists to shine individually and in duet. This is an exciting challenge for a band and a hugely enjoyable experience for the audience. \nFor this brand-new project\, Luke Annesley has assembled some great musicians\, all well-known to Bristol audiences (and beyond)\, to recreate Cohn’s arrangements\, which he has meticulously transcribed. With Ruth Hammond alongside Luke himself on tenor saxes\, the band also features Tom Berge on piano\, Riaan Vosloo on double bass and Scott Hammond on drums. Luke has a story about meeting Zoot Sims when he was 14 which he’ll bend your ear about given an opportunity\, but probably even better just to sit back and enjoy an evening’s homage to the music of Al and Zoot! \nRead more about the music of Al Cohn & Zoot Sims here: https://nationaljazzarchive.org.uk/explore/interviews/1634252-al-cohn-and-zoot-sims \n \n  \n25% off your food bill when you reserve a table in our  bar /restaurant\nWhen you book a table and enjoy dinner in our restaurant\, we reserve great seats for you\, ready for the performance\, so you can skip the queue and relax while enjoying your meal. \n\nPlease make your dinner reservation under the same name you used to book your tickets. \n\n*Does not include a ticket to your chosen event. Please purchase separately.  Please order promptly on arrival and allow 1 hour before doors open. \nBook a Table – Hen & Chicken

SUMMARY:Music: Furlined
DESCRIPTION:Following their sold-out Hen & Chicken show in February 2026\, we are excited to welcome Furlined back. \nInfectious hooks\, rich vocals and lush\, swooning cello are the defining features of Furlined\, a Bristol-based band formed in 2012 by singer-songwriter Neil Crossley and cellist Tegan Everett. \nThe band’s sound spans alt country and wry English chamber pop – “Morrissey meets Americana” as one review put it –  and they have been likened to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds\, Richard Hawley and Orange Juice. \nFurlined have attracted acclaim in publications such as Mojo\, Clash Magazine\, RnR and Billboard. “Songwriter Neil Crossley has one of those winning\, strong yet gentle Jackie Leven / Richard Hawley baritones that do male vulnerability beautifully\,” concluded Mojo in a 4/5 review of the band’s second album Win A Dream Wedding. “Furlined’s other striking sound is Tegan Everett’s cello\, which intros most of Crossley’s dark-honey melodies… A band with distinct aural charms.” \n“Morrissey meets Americana – superb songs with an irresistible English wit.” Total Guitar 9/10
