DESCRIPTION:Storytelling from the stage and the page – performing in our unique intimate surroundings. \nAmy Rigby has established herself as one of America’s enduring underground/cult/indie artists\, combining the insight and humour of country and folk songwriting with classic rock craftsmanship and punk DIY spirit. \nRaised in Pittsburgh\, schooled in late 70s lower Manhattan\, she formed pre-Americana country band Last Roundup and Richard Hell’s favorite girl group the Shams in NYC’s East Village before launching a solo career with 90s classic album Diary Of A Mod Housewife. Amy’s honest\, kinetic songwriting has earned her praise from critics (“pithy wisdom\, acerbic pen and sterling American guitar classicism” MOJO) and other artists: “Think Randy Newman and Loudon Wainwright\, at their best\,” says Steve Earle. \nHer songs have been covered by Laura Cantrell\, Ronnie Spector and Maria Doyle Kennedy. Her most recent album Hang In There With Me (Tapete\, 2024) was called “an absolute masterpiece” in Louder Than War. A storyteller both on stage and on the page\, Rigby has toured internationally for years and is the author of two memoirs: GIRL TO CITY (2019) and the follow-up\, GIRL TO COUNTRY\, that comes out March 2026 in the UK.

SUMMARY:Jazz: Martin Kern Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Following the cancellation by Shades of Shearin\,g we are very grateful to Swiss born saxophonist Martin Kern for stepping in and assembling this fine quartet at short notice. \nMartin Kern grew up in Bülach near Zürich in Switzerland and first started to play classical cello\, then later at age 17 picked up the saxophone. He studied in Paris at the Cèntre d´’Information Musicale and at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern before spending some time in New York. He then moved to Berlin where he became a part oft he vibrant jazz scene. It was there that he recorded his first albums as a bandleader\, “Visions” and “Now Is The Music”. He later moved to Vienna where he recorded his most recent CD “Live At The ORF”\, a live radio concert at the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. The original compositions on this album also borrow ideas from world music and blues. Martin’s music is a striking blend of bebop\, hard bop and contemporary jazz\, his sound reflecting those of legendary saxophonists Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon and others. \nIt’s first time at the club for Leeds College of Music graduate Sam Joyce on piano\, joined by regulars Riaan Vosloo on bass and Ryan Thrupp on drums.

DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand following last year’s sell-out gig\,  these Bristol-based funk meisters return to the Hen & Chicken. \nThey’ll be playing the finest cuts of Funky Soul-Jazz and upbeat Latin grooves to keep you dancing all night long. Primed to entertain\, with fresh arrangements of tunes by the likes of Ramsey Lewis\, Herbie Hancock\, Sergio Mendes\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Mongo Santamaria and Jimmy Smith\, this tight collective will leave your weekend on a high. \nCranking up the tremolo for those Hammond stings and going full Ramsey on the Piano\, but also stripping it back to some of that mellow\, funky Rhodes: Murray Benjamin\, a long time musician on the local scene – MC of Fromage En Feu\, and former band member of several Bristol Institutions (Mo-Funk\, Orquestra Montpelier & K’Chevere). \nWarming up to the full New Cut Collective horn section\, we give you the silky slide jazz/funk trombonist: Savio Pacini\, the go-to on the Bristol live and session scene; currently also gigging with Gee Baby and The Regz. \nJames Brown had Bootsy Collins\, Herbie Hancock had Freddie Washington\, but neither of these were available so we settled for the funkiest (and nicest) bassman in town: Mike Rogers\, at the back giving the band that solid groove foundation (Kid Sinister\, Stick of Rock & Gee Baby). \nFrom New Orleans\, Louisiana\, laying down those funky beats to set it all ablaze\, introducing the essential: Chris Courville (of Grammy-nominated band Lost Bayou Ramblers). \nExpanding our sound with sought after percussion skills\, the amazingly versatile: Brendan Hockey adds further groove to the band sound with his arsenal of bongos\, congas\, güiro and a bag full of extras. Previously and currently gigging around the UK and beyond with Baila La Cumbia\, Mo Funk & The Fantasy Orchestra. \nFrom sunny Napoli and raised on espresso\, pizza and funky vibes\, we introduce the newest member of the band: Antonio Moraca.
