SUMMARY:Jazz: Sam Crockatt Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Sam Crockatt – tenor sax\, Dale Hambridge – piano\, Henrik Jensen – bass\, Andy Hague – drums \nSaxophonist Sam Crockatt returns to the club to guest with a specially assembled house trio. \nHaving graduated from the Royal Academy\, Sam Crockatt formed a band with Gwilym Simcock\, Oli Hayhurst and Ben Reynolds leading to debut recording Howeird in 2008\, which won a Parliamentary Jazz Award later that year. Flood Tide followed commended by The Guardian for it’s “Haunting lyricism”. Citing John Coltrane\, Joe Henderson\, Wayne Shorter\, Sonny Rollins and Lee Konitz among his musical influences\, Sam’s ability to marry his understanding of past masters with contemporary styles keeps him constantly in demand and has taken him to stages at the EFG London Jazz Festival\, Cheltenham Jazz Festival\, Kragujevac Jazz Festival (Serbia) and WDR Festival (Cologne). He also appears on albums by vocalist Kaz Simmons and pianist Sam Leak. In 2011 Sam and his young family moved to Mells in Somerset\, the peal of the bells in his new home village inspiring the title track of most recent recording Mells Bells – the album has drawn praise from such eminent publications as The Guardian\, Jazzwise Magazine\, The Telegraph and The Financial Times. \n“Mells Bells further burnishes Crockatt’s substantial reputation” – The Guardian. \nA rare appearance at the club for pianist Dale Hambridge who is always super busy – he has previously played at the Hen and Chicken with Jingu Bang\, and has long associations with performers such as Moonlight Saving Time\, We Are Leif\, Nick Malcolm and Lucy Moon. \nBassist Henrik Jensen moved from Denmark to London in 1997 and is a graduate of the Royal Academy. He has toured the world from Tokyo to Moscow with various modern jazz projects and also as part of the band for close harmony group The Puppini Sisters. Henrik has previously appeared at the club as band leader with his quartet Followed By Thirteen and trio featuring Danish pianist Esben Tjalve. \nAlthough probably best known as a trumpeter Andy Hague has always played drums to an equal extent\, and has backed many visiting guest players both at the Be-Bop Club and back in the day at the legendary Albert Inn.

SUMMARY:Jazz: Joe Bradford Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Joe Bradford – trombone\, Greg Sterland – tenor sax\, Tom Berge – piano\, Chris Jones – bass\, Paolo Adamo – drums \nTrombonist Joe Bradford returns to the Be-Bop Club after his last sold out appearance. This time bringing another fantastic quintet\, playing a collection of his own compositions along with some hard bop tunes. Harking back to the 50’s and 60’s of East Coast Jazz\, the group will be bringing intensity\, intricate arrangements and plenty of warm lyricism to match. Drawing inspiration from artists like the Jazz Messengers\, Jackie Mclean and Kenny Dorham. \nTrombonist Joe Bradford is a familiar face on the Bristol scene. Having grown up playing in local big bands\, Joe studied in the USA for a year\, under the tutelage of Steve Davis (Art Blakey\, Chick Corea)\, and other greats. Since then Joe returned to Bristol as a professional player. You may have seen him playing with the Tammy Payne Quintet\, the Jonny Bruce Organ Sextet\, the Dockside Latin Orchestra or Soma Soma\, and he is now also running a popular series of jazz workshops. \nSaxophonist Greg Sterland is a graduate of the Royal Welsh College and has played at the club several times before both as a band leader and as part of the Jonny Bruce Organ Quartet. He cites a wide range of influences including Lester Young\, Lars Gullin\, Warne Marsh and Joe Lovano and is renowned for his adventurous but melodic style of improvisation. \nPianist Tom Berge is a graduate of Leeds College and is constantly busy gigging across the south west. With a growing reputation as a film composer\, Tom wrote the music for Laura Tofarides’ award winning short animation Brain Space. Click for promo video. \nGreat to welcome back bassist Chris Jones – having been a mainstay of the Bristol music scene for several years\, Chris moved up to Coventry in 2025. Chris studied jazz at the University of Exeter and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where he had the privilege of studying and playing with some great musicians such as John Taylor\, Stan Sulzmann\, Mark Hodgson and Dave Holland. \nDrummer Paolo Adamo grew up in a tiny village in the southern Italian region of Molise. He attended the Thelonious Monk Jazz Academy of Campobasso for nine years\, and for six years participated in Jazz Puzzle\, an annual seminar in Belgium where he played with musicians from all over Europe\, and which helped inform his decision at age 19 to relocate to Bristol to pursue a career in music.

DESCRIPTION:Gideon Tazelaar – tenor sax\, Arnie Somogyi – bass\, Andy Hague – trumpet\, Jim Blomfield – piano\, Ryan Thrupp – drums. \nFor tonight’s presentation we welcome back after a long absence one of the Be-Bop Club’s co-founders\, the great bassist Arnie Somogyi. Arnie started the club alongside Italian pianist Andrea Papini around 1988 as far as anyone can remember\, originally in the now closed Crown and Anchor at the bottom of Jacobs Wells Rd. \nArnie visits as part of a short tour featuring special guest New York based saxophonist Gideon Tazelaar. \nOne of the rising stars of European jazz\, tenor saxophonist Gideon Tazelaar grew up in the Netherlands\, where he developed his musical skills by playing with saxophonist Benjamin Herman and drummer John Engels from a young age. A prodigious talent\, he was admitted to the Bachelor’s degree programme at Amsterdam Conservatoire at the age of just 14. In 2017 he moved to New York City\, where he studied at the Juilliard School of Music and played with Wynton Marsalis in a number of line-ups. Now a full-time resident of New York\, where he is mentored by saxophone legend George Coleman\, Tazelaar is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most exciting young tenor players on that scene\, working as a sideman with artists as diverse as Dr Lonnie Smith\, Eric Alexander and Dick Oatts as well as leading his own bands. His debut album ‘Volume One’ which he co-released with trumpeter Ian Cleaver\, features Danish bassist Felix Moseholm and Jorge Rossy on drums\, both of whom are currently touring as two thirds of the Brad Mehldau Trio. \nBassist Arnie Somogyi is well-known to jazz audiences through his work with some of the stars of the British and international scene. A band leader in his own right he has performed frequently at world-famous jazz club\, Ronnie Scott’s and at festivals throughout the world with major artists including the Mingus Big Band\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Art Farmer\, James Moody\, Seamus Blake and Annie Ross\, as well as international stars Tom Jones\, Charlie Watts and Amy Winehouse and British jazz legends such as Stan Tracey and Kenny Wheeler. His music has featured on radio\, television and in films and he has been nominated for both BBC Radio 3 and Parliamentary Jazz Awards and released 4 critically acclaimed albums as a leader. \nTo complete the specially assembled band for tonight’s gig\, Gideon and Arnie are joined by Bristol’s Andy Hague – trumpet\, Jim Blomfield- piano and Ryan Thrupp – drums. \n
