Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic. \nSo\, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years\, won 8 awards for performing\, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself\, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4)\, written 6 books and 5 play scripts\, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4\, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4\, sued the police (and won) 3 times\, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. \nIf that’s not enough\, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank\, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance\, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right\, there’s more\, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. DESCRIPTION:For our first touring band of the season we’re pleased to present for the first time saxophonist Sam Glaser\, with a band of current London luminaries who between them have been performing with artists such as Alex Hitchcock\, Emma Rawicz\, Ant Law\, Kit Downes and more. \nSam Glaser is an alto saxophonist\, composer and bandleader based in London\, UK. He is a virtuosic improviser and a unique voice on the UK jazz scene\, and his warm and distinctive saxophone sound\, paired with lyrical\, energetic\, and emotive playing\, have led to renown amongst musicians and listeners alike. Sam’s saxophone playing is firmly grounded in the history of jazz music but takes great inspiration from modern masters including Will Vinson\, Chris Potter\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, and Ben Wendel. \nSam graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2016 with a 1st class honours degree in jazz saxophone\, where he studied with some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians including Julian Siegel\, Iain Ballamy\, Nikki Iles\, James Allsopp\, Gareth Lockrane\, and Tom Cawley. He was also a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra between 2013 and 2018\, where he held the principle alto chair for two years and during which time performed with artists including Gregory Porter\, Clare Teal\, Zoe Rahman\, and Jason Yarde. He was also a featured soloist on the studio album “NYJO 50”\, released on Whirlwind Records in 2015. \nHighly sought after\, Sam has performed with leading musicians and bands including the Tom Smith big band\, Patchwork Jazz Orchestra\, the Gareth Lockrane Big Bang\, Adam Woodcock’s Meridian\, and the Tom Niblock big band. DESCRIPTION:Dar Williams’ lyrics contain bouquets of optimism\, delivered on melodies alternating between beguiling lightness and understated gravity. \nWilliams strongly believes that all of us possess our own power and ability to achieve\, and she rejects the exceptionalism that encourages us to “admire that yonder star\,” while making us feel small and insignificant; unworthy of shining on our own but hoping to catch enough distant light to inspire some tiny accomplishment. Williams has always been very interested in how to control our future and this album has to do with the fact that at some point\, you just can’t. Like everyone else\, Williams spent 2020 in that state of non-control. \nShe and longtime producer Stewart Lerman tracked most of the album\, her 12th studio recording\, in November of 2019. In late February of 2020\, she cut the title tune in Woodstock with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell\, who produced the track and played guitars\, pedal steel and twangy baritone guitar. When told they had to postpone a mid-March mixing date\, Campbell said he wasn’t feeling well anyway. Turns out he’d contracted a serious case of COVID-19. That was a clear sign that at some point\, you have to meet life where it meets you …the common thread throughout that these songs\, the willingness to meet life as it arrives. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: From A to Z – The music of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims
DESCRIPTION:Al Cohn and Zoot Sims were one of the great tenor sax partnerships in jazz. In a series of albums beginning in the late fifties\, along with regular spots at the Half Note in New York\, they developed a quintet sound based on a joyful approach to performing\, rooted in swing\, informed by bebop and growing from their experiences together in the Woody Herman band. Al Cohn’s arrangements are super hip and not performed all that often. They often create the feeling of a ‘mini-big band’\, with driving swing and tight ensemble playing\, along with space for the soloists to shine individually and in duet. This is an exciting challenge for a band and a hugely enjoyable experience for the audience. \nFor this brand-new project\, Luke Annesley has assembled some great musicians\, all well-known to Bristol audiences (and beyond)\, to recreate Cohn’s arrangements\, which he has meticulously transcribed. With Ruth Hammond alongside Luke himself on tenor saxes\, the band also features Tom Berge on piano\, Riaan Vosloo on double bass and Scott Hammond on drums. DESCRIPTION:Kevin Figes predominantly plays alto sax but sometimes also includes flute and baritone sax in his armoury. A mainstay of the Bristol scene for many years now\, Kevin is one of the city’s most prolific composers and has arranged music for various sized ensembles as well as running his own label\, Pig Records. His CD Changing Times was released during lockdown\, and reflects his interests in UK jazz of the late 60s and early 70s from artists such as Mike Osborne and Soft Machine. Changing Times received a 4-star review from Dave Gelly in The Guardian. \nFor this newly formed quartet Kevin has joined forces with guitarist Matt Hopkins\, whose melodic and inventive guitar playing has been featured in groups as stylistically diverse as Andy Sheppard’s Hotel Bristol\, Emily Wright & The Royals and the Hopkins-Hammond Trio. He also takes the lead role in the “Music of Pat Metheny” project alongside pianist Dave Newton. \nOn bass we have multi-instrumentalist Jules Jackson – whilst bass is his main instrument he is equally proficient on drums and keyboards\, and is also well known as a studio producer who has participated in the recording of many jazz albums. DESCRIPTION:Trumpeter Andy Hague ran his popular salsa/jazz octet Conjunto Gringo from 2010 to 2018\, and now presents a slimmed-down sextet version to play rearranged versions of the Conjunto repertoire\, plus lots of new ones. \nAiming to please equally both the jazz and salsa audiences\, the set contains Latin-jazz classics from Tito Puente\, Ray Barretto\, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk\, combined with a few Hague originals. The regular jazz quintet line-up is expanded to sextet for this project by the addition of Lisa Cherian on congas – a pretty much ubiquitous face in the Bristol music scene\, Lisa seems to play in nearly every band that relies on a strong groove – Mankala\, Jingu Bang\, K’Chevere\, Aji Pa’ Ti and World Government to name but a few. \nWell known in Bristol’s jazz scene\, in 2019 Andy Hague played for the first time with legendary UK jazz composer Mike Westbrook as part of his Uncommon Orchestra\, and post-Covid the band has appeared at Cheltenham and Cambridge Jazz Festivals\, the Rossini Festival in Lugo\, Italy and Ronnie Scott’s 2022 and 2023. \nLong-term associate saxophonist Ben Waghorn is a versatile musician who has worked in London’s West End and on many pop\, TV\, and film recordings. He can also be heard on recordings with Geoff Eales and Dave Stapleton [Slowly Rolling Camera]. Ben has also recently performed with the BBC Big Band and played in Singapore with the London Concert Orchestra. \nPianist Jim Blomfield has been a vital part of Bristol’s jazz scene for many years but is now gaining national recognition for his outstanding latin/salsa style playing. SUMMARY:Jazz: Nat Evans Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Nat Evans is a fairly recent graduate from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire\, and has a growing UK reputation having performed at prestigious jazz festivals including Cheltenham\, London and Birmingham. He has also taken to the international stage\, travelling abroad to perform at the LAVA Jazz Festival (Portugal)\, the Velo Swing Festival (Germany)\, as well as a bespoke performance at the Eastman School of Music (New York). Whilst at Birmingham Conservatoire he was mentored by guitarist Steve Banks as part of an Arts Council funded project\, culminating in having his arrangements performed by Wiltshire Youth Jazz Orchestra at Wiltshire Music Centre. \nNathan Thomas is a UK-based jazz composer and pianist and is also a graduate of Birmingham Conservatoire. He was awarded the 2026 Mike Gibbs Prize for composition and arranging. His recent album features saxophonist Alex Clarke alongside leading Birmingham musicians including Shanti Jayasinha and Dave Sear. He has performed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra\, Tara Lily\, Walt Weiskopf\, and The Voice winner Dennis van Aarssen\, and has appeared at venues including the 606 Club and Peggy’s Skylight\, with additional work spanning jazz quartet and string quartet writing that explores the intersection of improvisation and chamber orchestration\, and he is currently preparing to pursue further studies in composition in Europe. \nKyle Welch is a highly dexterous and adaptable bass player\, performing and touring in jazz\, prog rock\, hard rock\, and hip hop ensembles as well as running his own renowned jazz fusion band\, Boomslang. With a vast history playing at festivals like Love Supreme\, Cheltenham Jazz Festival\, London Jazz Festival and alike\, his musical voice is incredibly versatile\, allowing him to mesh with an ensemble and guide it to fresh and exciting new narrative spaces. \nDom Holyoake is sought after as both a talented drummer and producer. Known for his dynamic and technical approach to the drums\, he has toured extensively around the UK with projects such as jazz-fusion outfit Boomslang\, math-rock band Ranger and has appeared at venues such as the Windmill\, Brixton; 606 Club; Peggy’s Skylight\, and Band on the Wall (Manchester).
