SUMMARY:Jazz: Nick Malcolm and Martin Kolarides Quartetand Martin Kolarides
DESCRIPTION:Nick Malcolm – trumpet\, Martin Kolarides – guitar\, Greg Cordez – bass\, Mark Whitlam – drums \nTrumpeter Nick Malcolm should be well known to Bristol audiences and has a growing national reputation. A fearless and inventive soloist\, he moves effortlessly between completely free improvisation and blistering hard-bop. He is known for his work with Out Front\, Dee Byrne’s Outlines\, Rebecca Nash and has recently ended a long tenure with the Jazz Defenders. \nGuitarist Martin Kolarides is yet another fine musician who has been drawn from London into the mysterious jazz vortex of Frome in Somerset. A graduate of London’s Trinity College of Music\, Martin has established himself as one of the most creative\, versatile and hard working musicians in the UK. Equally at home playing rock\, blues\, swing and jazz\, Martin has worked with many outstanding musicians who have inspired his love of many styles including jazz\, folk\, Americana\, experimental pop and electronica to name just a few. In addition to writing for and directing his own groups\, Martin is a seasoned session player with numerous jazz and pop credits to his name… recent notable artists have included mainstream TV appearances with US singer-songwriter Valerie June as well as being the touring guitarist for another US act\, chart topping jazz/R&B singer Lizz Wright. Martin has also recorded two top 20 albums and performs internationally with English close harmony vocal trio The Puppini Sisters. He has also recently completed a European tour with US singer and Snarky Puppy guest vocalist Shayna Steele\, and is one of the founding members of electronic neo-soul outfit HUGH. Martin also produces music under the guise of ‘Sinking Monolith’ and has numerous writing and remix credits to his name. \nIt’s great to welcome back bassist Greg Cordez to the live scene. Having recorded three albums as band leader and composer\, two of which were recorded in the USA with top-flight American players\, Greg has rather retreated in to academia since Covid\, concentrating on his teaching job at BIMM music college – but now he’s back and ready for a new chapter. \nDrummer Mark Whitlam also tutors at BIMM and is currently working on his PhD. One of Bristol’s busiest musicians\, Mark has worked with major jazz names such as Andy Sheppard\, Iain Ballamy and Jason Rebello.

SUMMARY:Jazz: Trinomika
DESCRIPTION:Greg Sterland – tenor sax\, Pasquale Votino – bass\, Paolo Adamo – drums \nThis trio were heard recently hosting one of the jam sessions at the Stag and Hounds and impressed greatly with their well structured set and careful use of the chordless instrumentation. \nVery much a cooperative venture\, the compositions developed as a group make full use of the available pallet of sounds. You can hear the earthy influence of the down town New York scene as well as the avant garde. \nShades of Tim Berne\, Chris Speed et al as well as a plethora of influences from within the more straight ahead jazz tradition also – all played with heart and beauty in this highly interactive and musical trio.

SUMMARY:Jazz: James Borland Quartet
DESCRIPTION:James Borland – trumpet\, Nick Manz – piano\, Ben Love – bass\, Kai Chareunsy – drums. \nTrumpeter James Borland first visited the club in Nov 23 as part of the Birmingham based sextet Abacus led by Liam Brennan\, and impressed greatly with his warm sound and inventive phrasing. James was recently seen in national media performing with Bostin Brass\, the band picked to lead the funeral cortège for Ozzy Osbourne. \nOne of the most in-demand young musicians of the vibrant Birmingham jazz scene\, his characterful improvising speaks both of his love of the jazz tradition and also the forward-thinking melodicism of contemporary NY figureheads such as Ambrose Akinmusire and Immanuel Wilkins. His quartet brings together an impressive young rhythm section who share his love of free-flowing\, exciting jazz music\, featuring sought-after bass and drum team Ben Love and Kai Chareunsy\, and BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist Nick Manz on piano. SUMMARY:Jazz: Kevin Figes Ad Hoc Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Figes – alto sax/flute\, Dale Hambridge – piano\, Matthew Read – bass\, Andy Hague – drums \nDue to illness\, poor Brigitte Beraha has had to cancel the first part of her tour\, so many thanks for the musicians above for stepping in at short notice. The great thing about the Bristol scene is that it is often possible to put a really strong line-up together at short notice. \nKevin Figes is of course a stalwart of the scene\, endlessly creative and productive with his many projects\, Pig Records label and now short film ventures. The band will probably mainly play standard material\, but perhaps a couple of Kevin’s original tunes if a quick rehearsal is managed beforehand – just to be clear this line-up has been assembled especially for tonight’s gig and is not one of Kevin’s regular projects.

SUMMARY:Postponed: Julie July Band Acoustic
DESCRIPTION:Julie July Band performs original music inspired by the folk\, rock and blues movement of the 60s & 70s but with a contemporary 21st Century twist. With over a decade of gigging and recording experience\, they make their debut performance at The Hen & Chicken\, Bristol- celebrating a new album\, ‘Flight of Fancy’\, together with songs from their critically acclaimed albums ‘Lady of the First Light’ and ‘Wonderland’ plus a selection of Sandy Denny favourites. \nThe line-up features musicians with strong Folk-Rock roots including Dik Cadbury\, who played with Decameron and Steve Hackett\, on bass\, acoustic guitar and vocals and Mick Candler of Decameron and The Roll Movement on drums & percussion. Julie July brings powerful\, emotional and crystal-clear lead vocals with a voice that really echoes the late Sandy Denny. The Rock element of the band is provided by Steve Rezillo on lead guitar who has supported the likes of Thin Lizzy and Aztec Camera: Steve’s unbelievable talents on the guitar and in studio are essential to creating the band’s authentic Folk-Rock sound. The newest member of the band\, Australian Caley Groves\, brings fairy dust and magic to the mix with his acoustic guitar and offers a Latin\, gypsy-jazz twist to the band’s live performances. SUMMARY:Music: New Cut Collective ft Special Guests & DJ Jnr.D
DESCRIPTION:You will be dancing from the off with these Bristol-based funk meisters. They’ll be playing the finest cuts of Funky Soul-Jazz and upbeat Latin grooves. This tight collective is primed to entertain\, with original arrangements of tunes by the likes of Ramsey Lewis\, Herbie Hancock\, Sergio Mendes\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Mongo Santamaria and Jimmy Smith. \nThe line up features a core trio with a strong combined history of live and studio work. Cranking up the tremolo for those Hammond stings and going full Ramsey on the Piano\, but also stripping it back to some of that mellow\, funky Rhodes: Murray Benjamin\, a long time musician on the local scene – MC of Fromage En Feu\, and former band member of several Bristol Institutions (Mo-Funk\, Orquestra Montpelier & K’Chevere). \nChic had ‘Nard Edwards\, Herbie Hancock had Freddie Washington but neither of these were available so we settled for the funkiest (and nicest) bassman in town: Mike Rogers\, at the back giving the band that solid groove foundation (Kid Sinister\, Stick of Rock & Gee Baby). \nThe newest member of the band from New Orleans\, Louisiana\, laying down those funky beats to set it all ablaze\, introducing: Chris Courville (of Grammy-nominated band Lost Bayou Ramblers). \nSpecial Guests: At this Summer gig we will also be joined onstage by some select Bristol talent\, but you’ll need to come on in to fi nd out who… \nIn between sets\, DJ Steve Dawson (Jnr. D of BUMP RollerDisco) will be spinning the vinyl to keep those feet on the dance floor (bring spare shoes!). \nLimited numbers so book your tickets today to join the party… \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Hopkins-Hammond Trio with Gary Alesbrook
DESCRIPTION:The Hopkins-Hammond Trio was formed in 2016 to explore the classic organ trio line-up popularised by Jimmy Smith of Hammond organ\, guitar and drums. It was immediately apparent that the players generated a special chemistry\, and they have gone on to become one of the hardest grooving bands on the Bristol scene\, playing tunes by the likes of John Scofield\, Larry Goldings and Pat Metheny and their own originals. For this special event they are joined by outstanding trumpeter Gary Alesbrook. \nMatt Hopkins – guitar. Matt’s inventive and melodic guitar playing has been featured in groups as stylistically diverse as Andy Sheppard’s Hotel Bristol and Emily Wright & The Royals. He also takes the lead role in the “Music of Pat Metheny” project alongside pianist Dave Newton. Matt is also known as an instructor and educator\, specialising in jazz improvisation. \nScott Hammond – drums. Scott is probably best known for playing rock music with Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull all over the globe since 2010 but he’s not just a rocker. Jazz\, especially in the organ trio setting\, has always been close to Scott’s heart and this trio shows a more subtle side to his playing. In the jazz world Scott has worked with Alan Barnes\, Tina May\, Herb Geller\, Bobby Wellins\, Jason Rebello\, Pee Wee Ellis and many others. More recently Scott has formed funk band Jingu Bang to play early Herbie Hancock and Weather Report type material. \nRuth Hammond – organ. Ruth has many strings to her bow as she is equally adept on organ\, piano\, saxophones\, accordion and vocals. After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 1998\, she became Runner Up in the Young Jazz Musician of the Year (on tenor saxophone). She has released a solo album “All The Good Things” which features her singing her own songs. She also plays sax in Jingu Bang alongside Scott\, and is often heard around town with the Brass Junkies. \nSpecial guest: Gary Alesbrook – trumpet/flugelhorn. Gary studied jazz trumpet at Leeds College of Music. His debut jazz album\, “Jazz In Movies\,” was released in 2018 and his second album “The Stories We Tell Ourselves” was released in 2019. Alesbrook started his session career in 1999 with the Super Furry Animals\, touring and playing on the albums ‘Mwng\, Rings Around the World\, Hey Venus! and Phantom Power. He also played on Gruff Rhys solo album\, Hotel Shampoo. Alesbrook recorded with Kasabian in 2006 playing “The Doberman” on their second album “Empire.” He toured next with the Scissor Sisters on their UK dates and for their live DVD recorded July 2007 at London O2 arena. He then joined Kasabian for recording and touring from 2007 until the present day\, recording on Empire\, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum\, Velociraptor! 48:13 and most recently For Crying Out Loud. In between Kasabian commitments Alesbrook also toured and performed with US RnB artist Raphael Saadiq\, Kelis\, Rag ‘N’ Bone Man\, Nadine Coyle and recorded on albums KT Tunstall\, Tiger Suit and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Fini Bearman
DESCRIPTION:Fini Bearman is a superb vocalist who took over from Brigitte Beraha as vocal tutor for the last few years of the Falmouth Jazz Summer School\, and is Professor of Jazz Songwriting at London’s Guildhall School. Visiting the club for the first time\, she is touring nationally with her band of A-list London jazz musicians. \nFini tours regularly across Europe and notable performances include Ronnie Scott’s\, The Sage Gateshead\, The Barbican\, The A-Trane (Berlin)\, Cafe Mercedes Jazz (Valencia)\, Manzioli (Izola\, Slovenia) and Dizzy’s (Jazz at the Lincoln Center\, New York). Festival highlights include the London Jazz Festival\, Manchester Jazz Festival\, Berlin Jazz Festival\,  ‘Jazz Voices’ in Lithuania and ’Voicingers’ in Poland. \nFor this tour she is presenting music from her 5th studio album “Last Night of the World” (Pastiche Records). An eclectic collection of jazz\, folk & pop-infused songs\, Last Night of the World draws on Fini’s experiences of motherhood & new beginnings\, of love & loss\, sometimes of a new-found sense of meaning\, sometimes an existential lack thereof! The record was conceived using writing exercises created for her work teaching songwriting\, and these seeds grew over time\, coming to fruition in tandem with her pregnancy; final vocal and instrumental takes often taking place with Bridget asleep in a sling… Inspiration for the songs is drawn from a diverse spectrum of influences: the melodic inventiveness of Madison Cunningham\, the esoteric jazz/folk realms of Becca Stevens\, Chris Thile\, Paul Simon and the electronic\, minimalist songwriting voice of Bjork. \nThis album marks a departure from Fini’s last LP (the solo record La Loba\, 2020) and acts as a return to her true ‘musical north’- a jazz-meets-indie-pop rhythm section playing lyric-based songs\, with nuanced and at times complex harmonic structures and rhythmic idiosyncrasies. Each song is individual and unique in its own right\, with space for improvisation\, interaction and connection. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Matt Anderson And Friends
DESCRIPTION:London-based saxophonist and Dankworth Prize-winning composer Matt Anderson released his fourth album\, Live at Leeds Jazz Festival\, in 2024 with his long-running quartet. This live recording from the middle of their May 2023 U.K. tour is a snapshot of the band at their best: stretching out on a set of original tunes with a characteristically open\, interactive and risk-taking approach. The roots of jazz are never far away\, with a rhythmic feel and blues sensibility that is anchored in the tradition\, however the music also expands into other areas such as modal and contemporary harmony and British folk-style melodies\, giving the group a distinctive identity. \n“a well-integrated\, swinging and supremely confident ensemble… [with] a soulful depth to his musicality that underpins the academic attention to detail” – Jazzwise **** \n“The band’s synergy as an ensemble shines brightly in this live setting… a must-listen album” – Jazz in Europe \nBorn in the North Yorkshire Moors\, the son of a music teacher and based in Leeds for a time\, Matt has lived in London since 2015. Becoming part of the fertile jazz scene in the capital\, he has since performed with artists/bands such as Will Vinson\, Greg Hutchinson (with the Jiannis Pavlidis Quintet)\, Ivo Neame\, the Gareth Lockrane and Calum Gourlay big bands\, Jamie Doe’s Magic Lantern and Hannes Riepler\, and he has also toured in New Zealand\, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. In 2023\, he became a D’Addario Woodwinds artist and was also made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music for contributions to the music industry.\nFor this appearance\, Matt will be joined by some of his favourite musicians from the Bristol music scene\, playing for the first time with pianist Rebecca Nash and drummer Andy Hague\, alongside his long-time collaborator bassist Will Harris\, who is a regular member of the Matt Anderson Quartet. \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Sexteto Gringo
DESCRIPTION:Andy Hague – trumpet\, Ben Waghorn – tenor sax\, Jim Blomfield – piano\, Chris Jones – bass\, Lisa Cherian – congas\, Mark Whitlam – drums \nTrumpeter Andy Hague ran his popular salsa/jazz octet Conjunto Gringo from 2010 to 2018\, and now presents a slimmed down sextet version to play rearranged versions of the Conjunto repertoire\, plus lots of new ones. Aiming to please equally both the jazz and salsa audiences the set contains latin-jazz classics from Tito Puente\, Ray Barretto\, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk\, combined with a few Hague originals. \nThe regular jazz quintet line-up is expanded to sextet for this project by the addition of Lisa Cherian on congas – a pretty much ubiquitous face in the Bristol music scene\, Lisa seems to play in nearly every band that relies on a strong groove – Mankala\, Jingu Bang\, K’Chevere\, Aji Pa’ Ti and World Government to name but a few. \nWell known in Bristol’s jazz scene\, in 2019 Andy Hague played for the first time with legendary UK jazz composer Mike Westbrook as part of his Uncommon Orchestra\, and post-Covid the band has appeared at Cheltenham and Cambridge Jazz Festivals\, the Rossini Festival in Lugo\, Italy and Ronnie Scott’s 2022 and 2023. \nLong-term associate saxophonist Ben Waghorn is a versatile musician who has worked in London’s West End and on many pop\, TV\, and film recordings. He can also be heard on recordings with Geoff Eales and Dave Stapleton [Slowly Rolling Camera]. Ben has also recently performed with the BBC Big Band and played in Singapore with the London Concert Orchestra. \nPianist Jim Blomfield has been a vital part of Bristol’s jazz scene for many years but is now gaining national recognition for his outstanding latin/salsa style playing. Besides performing with The Bristol Salsa Orchestra\, Dockside Latin Orchestra and Dockside Revolutions\, JIm has also played recently with salsa legend Roberto Pla at London’s Pizza Express. “Jim Blomfield is the best British pianist you’ve never heard of and is an absolute marvel” – Independent on Sunday. Bassist Chris Jones and drummer Mark Whitlam have also worked together with their own project We Are Leif\, which has received a lot of air-play on Jazz FM.

Ruth Hammond (Hopkins Hammond Trio\, Jingu Bang\, Starlings\, Brass Junkies) is Bristol’s top improvising multi-instrumentalist\, equally at home performing at Ronnie Scott’s\, The National Theatre or a Serbian Castle on all number of woodwinds and keyboards. SUMMARY:Jazz: Simon Spillett
DESCRIPTION:Our special guest soloist tonight is Simon Spillett\, who over the past twenty years or so has established himself as one of the UK’s pre-eminent saxophonists. Simon is a firm advocate of straight ahead hard-swinging modern jazz\, and his lack of pretention has made him a huge hit with the UK jazz audience\, although he sometimes jokes online about his lack of eligibility for Arts Council grants. \nSince his last visit in 2024 Simon has been busy promoting and performing the music from his big band album Dear Tubby H\, featuring the cream of the UK jazz scene and dedicated to performing the arrangements of Tubby Hayes\, many of which have not been heard performed live since Tubby passed away in 1973. Released in Sept 2023 the album has been immediately hailed as one of the most significant UK jazz recordings of recent years\, and gained an extremely rare 5-star review in Jazzwise magazine. “Everything about this first-ever release on drummer Pete Cater’s new mister PC label exudes class. The look of the album\, its design and booklet notes\, the superb photography\, the marvellous sound\, but above all\, the sheer fizzing intensity of the playing. It’s all here.” – Pete Vacher\, Jazzwise. \nAlongside his playing career Simon is also a jazz author and reviewer\, perhaps best known for his biography of Tubby Hayes\, “The Long Shadow of the Little Giant.”  Both through his writing and his playing he has done a huge amount to bring the achievements of one of the UK’s most important jazz musicians to a whole new generation. Although able to sound uncannily like Tubby when he chooses to\, Simon’s palette is broader than just one player and he is also highly knowledgeable about the styles of other saxophonists such as Zoot Sims\, Stan Getz\, Dexter Gordon and John Coltrane. \nSimon has won several awards\, including the tenor saxophone category of the British Jazz Awards (2011)\, Jazz Journal magazine’s Critic’s Choice CD of the Year (2009) Rising Star in the BBC Jazz Awards (2007) and Services to British Jazz in the 2016 British Jazz Awards. \nFor tonight’s quartet performance Simon is backed by some of Bristol’s finest – Tim Funnell – piano\, Will Harris – bass and Andy Hague – drums.

SUMMARY:Music: John Donegan Sextet
DESCRIPTION:John Donegan – piano\, Andy Hague – trumpet\, Luke Annesley – alto sax\,  Ben Waghorn – tenor sax\, Riaan Vosloo – bass\, Ryan Thrupp – drums. \nPianist John Donegan provided stand-out gigs in 2023 and 2024\, and returns to present a new CD and batch of compositions. For his new album “We Will Meet Again\, Sometime” John sticks with the three horn line-up of the Irish Sextet featuring some of the biggest names in the Irish jazz scene. On four tracks the regular sextet is expanded to septet by the addition of Hugh Buckley on guitar\, cousin to the famous sax playing brothers Michael and Richie. “We Will Meet Again\, Sometime” achieved a hard-to-get four star review from respected jazz author Pete Vacher in the recent edition of Jazzwise magazine\, and was also made Editor’s Choice – “it’s a packed and varied programme coupling fine writing and striking playing by these Irish superstars.” \nOriginally from Cork in Ireland\, John Donegan lived in Bristol during the 90s and was a mainstay of the jazz scene here before work took him to London. Now retired from his day job\, over the past few years John has been able to dedicate his time exclusively to music and has released several recordings demonstrating his compositional skills including a suite of 21 contemporary pieces which have been released as 2 CDs\, Siamsa Vols 1 & 2. “An intriguing combination of classic bebop laced with Irish folk melody\, this album from pianist John and his saxophonist friend Tommaso Starace is full of sublime lyrical moments” – Musicians Union Magazine. \nWhen performing in London John’s sextet includes such heavy hitters as Steve Fishwick on trumpet and Alex Hitchcock on tenor sax\, but for tonight we have reunited a special cast of Bristol’s finest players to perform John’s excellent arrangements – hopefully all of whom should be no strangers to our regular audience.

SUMMARY:Music: Dee Byrne's Outlines
DESCRIPTION:Dee Byrne – alto sax\, Nick Malcolm – trumpet\, Tom Ward – clarinets\, Rebecca Nash – piano\, Olie Brice – bass\, Andrew Lisle – drums \nDee Byrne has a powerful and innovative sound on alto sax\, and is a very creative and original composer. Her album Outlines was released on Whirlwind Recordings in June 2023 and was included in ‘Best Jazz on Bandcamp\, July 2023’ and ‘Best of Jazz UK 2023‘ Spotify playlist\, with radio play on Jazz FM and BBC Radio 3. The six piece line-up includes local heroes Nick Malcolm and Rebecca Nash. \nThe band played a sold out show at the Bath Jazz Weekend January 2025 and received some great reviews: \n… a contemporary approach to small band\, collective\, free-wheeling improvisations. Her layered and pulsing themes\, driven along by the energy of Olie Brice’s bass and Andrew Lisle on the kit\, prepared the ground for some formidable and expansive soloing\, not least from Byrne herself – Mike Collins\, UK Jazz News \nSaxophonist Dee Byrne’s Outlines sextet swung effortlessly from harmonic chorales to free blowing anarchy and back – Tony Benjamin\,\nBristol 24/7 \nI wasn’t the only audience member to enjoy this thrilling blend of composition and improvisation with Byrne’s evocative\, colourful and intelligent writing given colourful voice by a supremely talented sextet of hand picked collaborators – Ian Mann\, The Jazz Mann
