SUMMARY:Jazz: Liam Brennan's Abacus
DESCRIPTION:Composer Liam Brennan last presented Abacus at the club in 2023\, and returns as part of a short tour to promote their new album\, which was recorded live in the same year. The band features some of the finest players from the Birmingham and London scenes\, and on this occasion includes our own Nick Malcolm on trumpet\, standing in for regular trumpeter James Borland. \nFormed in 2022\, the project concept was heavily influenced by Omer Avital’s Asking No Permission which featured a 4-horn frontline. The music aims to combine concepts from both the jazz small group tradition as well as the big band lineage \nLiam draws influences from composers John Hollenbeck and John Taylor\, as well as Charles Mingus and Oliver Nelson. He is currently studying a masters in composition and improvisation in Gothenburg\, Sweden with an Erasmus project in Oslo\, Norway. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Andy Hague Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Trumpeter Andy Hague returns with his quintet to close off the club’s 25/26 season. The music will be a mixture of tunes from quintet album Coming of Age [2018]\, Andy’s 2021 quartet album Release and a few tunes from other current jazz composers. \n“So impressed with this record\, wow\, it’s current\, it’s hip” – Linley Hamilton\, BBC Radio Ulster’s Jazz World. “it’s the variety of the musical structures deployed\, as well as the sheer spirit and fire in these performances that makes this a significant milestone for Hague and his chums” – Peter Vacher\, four star review in Jazzwise March 2019. \nWell known in Bristol’s jazz scene\, in 2019 Andy Hague played for the first time with legendary UK jazz composer Mike Westbrook as part of his Uncommon Orchestra\, and post-Covid the band has appeared at Cheltenham and Cambridge Jazz Festivals\, the Rossini Festival in Lugo\, Italy and Ronnie Scott’s 2022 and 2023. \nLong term associate saxophonist Ben Waghorn is a versatile musician who has worked in London’s West End and on many pop\, TV and film recordings. He has been involved in a range of projects with Keith Tippett\, including ‘Tapestry’\, a piece written by Keith for two saxophone quartets and the BBC singers\, the quartet ‘Work in Progress’ and The Keith Tippett Octet. He can also be heard on recordings with Geoff Eales and Dave Stapleton [Slowly Rolling Camera]. Ben has also recently performed with the BBC Big Band and played in Singapore with the London Concert Orchestra. Pianist Jim Blomfield has been a vital part of Bristol’s jazz scene for many years and has accompanied many of the UK’s best known players. He has released two trio CDs of his own compositions. “Jim Blomfield is the best British pianist you’ve never heard of and is an absolute marvel” – Independent on Sunday. Bassist Riaan Vosloo works regularly with saxophonist Ed Jones and runs the post-grad programme at BIMM Bristol music college. SUMMARY:Music: Heathen Apostles
DESCRIPTION:Born of the voices of past lives and baptized in the dust bowl dirt\, the Gothic Americana music of the Heathen Apostles harkens back to a bygone chapter of American history. Using contrasting influences such as Bauhaus\, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and The Pogues along with Howlin’ Wolf\, Loretta Lynn (the band covers her classic Fist City) and Bessie Smith\, the Heathen Apostles have created a style of music that at once conjurs both angels and demons\, and will enlighten a darkened soul. \nCrossing paths at a gathering one Indian summer evening\, femme fatale bellower Mather Louth (Radio Noir) and rock n roll veteran Chopper Franklin (The Cramps\, Mau Maus\, Nick Curran & the Lowlifes) quickly uncovered a mutual appreciation for murder balladry\, Americana\, and memento mori. It was not long before a collaboration that sought to marry these interests in a sonic landscape\, the Heathen Apostles\, surfaced. The landscape was further tilled with the addition of Luis Mascaro on violin. \nTheir 7 albums – Boot Hill Hymnal (2013)\, Fire to the Fuse (2015)\, Requiem For a Remix (2016)\, Bloodgrass Vol. 1 & 2 (2018)\, Dust To Dust (2019) Bloodgrass Vol. 3 & 4 (2022) and The In Between (2024) – along with their many EPs and singles (their release The Fall was named Best EP of 2018 by Folk n Rock magazine)\, capture the essence of the Heathen Apostles modus operandi: Southern Gothic Americana imagery surrounded by haunting\, minor-chord melodies\, musical influences including Gothic Roots music\, Bluegrass\, Blues\, and Gypsy Jazz\, all deftly bound together by the band’s dark and sometimes brooding sense of a bygone age. \n\n  \n
