SUMMARY:Jazz: Trinomika
DESCRIPTION:Greg Sterland – tenor sax\, Pasquale Votino – bass\, Paolo Adamo – drums \nThis trio were heard recently hosting one of the jam sessions at the Stag and Hounds and impressed greatly with their well structured set and careful use of the chordless instrumentation. \nVery much a cooperative venture\, the compositions developed as a group make full use of the available pallet of sounds. You can hear the earthy influence of the down town New York scene as well as the avant garde. \nShades of Tim Berne\, Chris Speed et al as well as a plethora of influences from within the more straight ahead jazz tradition also – all played with heart and beauty in this highly interactive and musical trio.

SUMMARY:Jazz: Nick Malcolm and Martin Kolarides Quartetand Martin Kolarides
DESCRIPTION:Nick Malcolm – trumpet\, Martin Kolarides – guitar\, Greg Cordez – bass\, Mark Whitlam – drums \nTrumpeter Nick Malcolm should be well known to Bristol audiences and has a growing national reputation. A fearless and inventive soloist\, he moves effortlessly between completely free improvisation and blistering hard-bop. He is known for his work with Out Front\, Dee Byrne’s Outlines\, Rebecca Nash and has recently ended a long tenure with the Jazz Defenders. \nGuitarist Martin Kolarides is yet another fine musician who has been drawn from London into the mysterious jazz vortex of Frome in Somerset. A graduate of London’s Trinity College of Music\, Martin has established himself as one of the most creative\, versatile and hard working musicians in the UK. Equally at home playing rock\, blues\, swing and jazz\, Martin has worked with many outstanding musicians who have inspired his love of many styles including jazz\, folk\, Americana\, experimental pop and electronica to name just a few. In addition to writing for and directing his own groups\, Martin is a seasoned session player with numerous jazz and pop credits to his name… recent notable artists have included mainstream TV appearances with US singer-songwriter Valerie June as well as being the touring guitarist for another US act\, chart topping jazz/R&B singer Lizz Wright. Martin has also recorded two top 20 albums and performs internationally with English close harmony vocal trio The Puppini Sisters. He has also recently completed a European tour with US singer and Snarky Puppy guest vocalist Shayna Steele\, and is one of the founding members of electronic neo-soul outfit HUGH. Martin also produces music under the guise of ‘Sinking Monolith’ and has numerous writing and remix credits to his name. \nIt’s great to welcome back bassist Greg Cordez to the live scene. Having recorded three albums as band leader and composer\, two of which were recorded in the USA with top-flight American players\, Greg has rather retreated in to academia since Covid\, concentrating on his teaching job at BIMM music college – but now he’s back and ready for a new chapter. \nDrummer Mark Whitlam also tutors at BIMM and is currently working on his PhD. One of Bristol’s busiest musicians\, Mark has worked with major jazz names such as Andy Sheppard\, Iain Ballamy and Jason Rebello.

SUMMARY:Jazz: Yetii
DESCRIPTION:Alex Veitch – piano\, Ashley John Long – bass\, Alex Goodyear – drums \nYetii return to the club to celebrate the release of their second album Inner Worlds. \nInner Worlds is about what goes on beneath the surface. Each composition immerses the listener in a different experience or state of mind. Singing melodies open and shift to reveal their inner workings. Solos morph into group improvisations: a shared single voice that ebbs and flows between and within the band’s original compositions. The album is a distillation and documentation of the sound we have formed over time at our monthly residency in Bristol over the last 7 years. \n2025 has been a big year in the world of Yetii. They played their concert hall debut to a sold out 400-strong crowd at St. George’s in Bristol\, supported The Bad Plus on their recent UK tour\, and have sold out each of their monthly gigs at The Greenbank in Bristol\, including collaborations with Parliamentary Award winner Arun Ghosh\, Get the Blessing’s Jake McMurchie\, and most recently Edition’s Ant Law. \n“all played with great beauty and sensitivity… a standing ovation greeted the end of their set ” Jazzwise\n“A performance that enthralled and delighted the audience ★★★★★” The Jazz Mann\n“Fluent and wildly inventive improvisers” UK Jazz News \n

SUMMARY:Live Jazz: Jonathan Gee Trio SW
DESCRIPTION:We’re very excited to present pianist Jonathan Gee\, one of the UK’s finest players with an international reputation including many European tours and frequent trips to New York. He is perhaps best known to the Bristol audience for some of the most memorable nights at the legendary Albert Inn\, where he appeared many times with saxophonist Ed Jones and trumpeter Damon Brown. He visits as part of a short SW tour facilitated by Devon based bass player and sculptor Marcus Vergette. \nJonathan is one the most prolific and imaginative composer-pianists operating today\, with a succession of ever-enticing bands and projects with world class line-ups from Europe and the USA. Aside from his own bands with which he has recorded 8 albums\, he has also worked closely with Bobby Wellins\, Claire Martin and Tim Whitehead\, Pharoah Sanders\, Mark Murphy and Art Farmer. With Tony Kofi he co-founded the Monk Liberation Front\, whose legendary performances of the complete Thelonious Monk catalogue have led to award-winning recordings.  He has performed in groups comprised of leading musicians from France\, Finland and Italy\, and a fantastic trio emerging from the hothouse of the New York jazz scene featuring Joseph Lepore and Nasheet Waits which has packed out Dizzy’s at Lincoln Centre. \nMarcus Vergette\, musician\, bell-maker\, sculptor\, was born on the banks of the Mississippi river in Southern Illinois. He grew up in the UK. Much of his recent work involves making large bells (up to 3 metres high) in bronze\, – his Time and Tide Bells. These are hung in specific locations around the coast and rung by the action of the sea at high tide. The first was installed at Appledore\, Devon\, in 2009. Subsequent sites range from Trinity Buoy Wharf\, on the Thames\, to the Outer Hebrides. Marcus is an accomplished double bass player and composer\, and has played in projects led by UK jazz legend Mike Westbrook over the past two decades. \n

SUMMARY:Live Jazz: The Text Messengers Play The Messengers
DESCRIPTION:Last year’s Christmas Special was such fun we thought we’d do it again\, but with a few differences – alto sax player Luke Annesley who performed last year is off with the John Wilson Orchestra\, providing an opportunity to invite the remarkable trombonist Raph Clarkson to step in. \nFor much of the 1970s and 80s Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers featured a trumpet\, alto sax and tenor sax front-line\, but prior to that in the mid to late 1960s the band included either Freddie Hubbard or Lee Morgan on trumpet\, Wayne Shorter on tenor sax and Curtis Fuller on trombone\, so this year we’re attempting to recreate the sound of the band from this period. \nTrumpeter Andy Hague has been presenting occasional sextet gigs under the Text Messengers name for a number of years\, but the nod to Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers has more been due to the three horns front line rather than the repertoire. However\, Andy has now amassed sufficient arrangements actually performed by the Jazz Messengers that the band can now present a full programme of Jazz Messengers classics\, covering several eras of Art Blakey’s legendary group with compositions by Benny Golson\, Bobby Timmons\, Wayne Shorter and Bobby Watson. \nTenor saxophonist Dan Newberry has become a favourite of Bristol audiences in recent years with his hard blowing yet melodic style. He is now living here having completed his Masters at the Royal Welsh College in Cardiff. Dan has recently been playing with epic funk band Hungry Hungry Hippos alongside trumpeter Gary Alesbrook and guitarist Alex Hutchings. \nTrombonist Raph Clarkson moved to Bristol a few years ago\, and has had a great impact on the city’s jazz scene\, working frequently in projects alongside bassist Riaan Vosloo. An acclaimed composer and arranger\, Raph has been an integral part of the UK jazz scene for two decades\, gaining recognition for adventurous album releases such as Soldiering On\, Resolute\, and This Is How We Grow. Clarkson’s writing for the exciting 15-piece orchestra Dissolute Society draws on many genres\, from jazz to progressive rock to classical music\, but is ultimately defined by the artist’s strength of character and imagination. \nPianist Jim Blomfield is of course one of the mainstays of Bristol’s jazz scene. He has backed countless big name guest soloists and released two albums of his own music which blend jazz with electronica and contemporary music influences. He is also well known as one of the UK’s finest salsa pianists and appears in many Latin ensembles\, including recently touring with Cuban band Asere. \nBassist Riaan Vosloo recently gained a doctorate\, and is well known as a performer\, composer\, producer and educator. He has composed music for TV and films and has production credits on albums by Jamie Cullum and Gregory Porter. He is currently course leader for the MA in Popular Music Practice at BIMM Bristol\, and has previously taught at Birmingham Conservatoire. \nDrummer Ryan Thrupp recently graduated with a First from the Royal Welsh College jazz degree course and besides his jazz activities plays with funky festival favourites Cut Capers and appeared on live BBC TV from Glastonbury 2023 with afro-beat balafon player N’famady Kouyaté. \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Joe Steels Group
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Joe Steels is based in Appleby in Westmorland and has assembled a band featuring some of the best players in the North East. \nExpect shimmering harmonies\, intricate lines\, and an instinct for space that lets every note breathe. Joe’s playing moves between lyrical storytelling and fearless improvisation\, drawing on influences from modern jazz\, folk and ambient soundscapes. \nTouring to promote their second album\, ‘A Blue Patch’ draws together a selection of narratives taken from various aspects of his life and is more broadly a commentary on his belief in music as a vital part of what it is to be human;  the euphoric moments\, the times that test us and just simply being. Powerful melodies derived from folk and Celtic themes metamorphose with jazz harmony and rhythm in a fusion of genres that is full of excitement\, optimism and heartfelt connectivity. \n“Wonderful!” – Nikki Iles\n“…Joe’s flowing lines a thing of beauty” – Bebop Spoken Here\n“the standout act” – Simply Jazz Talk \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Martin Kern Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Following the cancellation by Shades of Shearin\,g we are very grateful to Swiss born saxophonist Martin Kern for stepping in and assembling this fine quartet at short notice. \nMartin Kern grew up in Bülach near Zürich in Switzerland and first started to play classical cello\, then later at age 17 picked up the saxophone. He studied in Paris at the Cèntre d´’Information Musicale and at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern before spending some time in New York. He then moved to Berlin where he became a part oft he vibrant jazz scene. It was there that he recorded his first albums as a bandleader\, “Visions” and “Now Is The Music”. He later moved to Vienna where he recorded his most recent CD “Live At The ORF”\, a live radio concert at the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. The original compositions on this album also borrow ideas from world music and blues. Martin’s music is a striking blend of bebop\, hard bop and contemporary jazz\, his sound reflecting those of legendary saxophonists Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon and others. \nIt’s first time at the club for Leeds College of Music graduate Sam Joyce on piano\, joined by regulars Riaan Vosloo on bass and Ryan Thrupp on drums.

SUMMARY:The New Cut Collective + Special Guest DJ Tom Westwood
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand following last year’s sell-out gig\,  these Bristol-based funk meisters return to the Hen & Chicken. \nThey’ll be playing the finest cuts of Funky Soul-Jazz and upbeat Latin grooves to keep you dancing all night long. Primed to entertain\, with fresh arrangements of tunes by the likes of Ramsey Lewis\, Herbie Hancock\, Sergio Mendes\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Mongo Santamaria and Jimmy Smith\, this tight collective will leave your weekend on a high. \nCranking up the tremolo for those Hammond stings and going full Ramsey on the Piano\, but also stripping it back to some of that mellow\, funky Rhodes: Murray Benjamin\, a long time musician on the local scene – MC of Fromage En Feu\, and former band member of several Bristol Institutions (Mo-Funk\, Orquestra Montpelier & K’Chevere). \nWarming up to the full New Cut Collective horn section\, we give you the silky slide jazz/funk trombonist: Savio Pacini\, the go-to on the Bristol live and session scene; currently also gigging with Gee Baby and The Regz. \nJames Brown had Bootsy Collins\, Herbie Hancock had Freddie Washington\, but neither of these were available so we settled for the funkiest (and nicest) bassman in town: Mike Rogers\, at the back giving the band that solid groove foundation (Kid Sinister\, Stick of Rock & Gee Baby). \nFrom New Orleans\, Louisiana\, laying down those funky beats to set it all ablaze\, introducing the essential: Chris Courville (of Grammy-nominated band Lost Bayou Ramblers). \nExpanding our sound with sought after percussion skills\, the amazingly versatile: Brendan Hockey adds further groove to the band sound with his arsenal of bongos\, congas\, güiro and a bag full of extras. Previously and currently gigging around the UK and beyond with Baila La Cumbia\, Mo Funk & The Fantasy Orchestra. \nFrom sunny Napoli and raised on espresso\, pizza and funky vibes\, we introduce the newest member of the band: Antonio Moraca. Fast fingered\, a master of the wah-wah and an aficionado of jazz soul\, Antonio has toured Italy with many bands including Antipodia\, Radio Pulp & Radiokiller. \nIn between sets\, Dj Tom Westwood (of Bar57 fame) will be spinning the vinyl to keep those feet on the dance floor (bring spare shoes!).  Bigger venue this year but book early to enjoy special ticket prices. Early Bird tickets on sale now! (if you’re quick enough).

SUMMARY:Jazz: Dave Jones Quintet - 2 Down and 1 Across
DESCRIPTION:Following the quintet’s previous projects ‘A Hole in One’ and ‘A Hole in Two’\, they now have a new project for 2026 – ‘2 Down and 1 Across’ featuring new interpretations of tunes from Songbook\, arguably the finest album by Kenny Garrett\, alongside new and not so new tunes by pianist/composer Dave Jones. \nThe opening tune of Garrett’s Songbook album\, ‘2 Down and 1 Across’\, gives a dramatic start to arguably his finest album\, bringing together a particularly strong set of compositions and one of his finest line-ups featuring the late great pianist Kenny Kirkland and Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts on the drums. The Dave Jones Quintet will be interpreting a handful of Garrett tunes from Songbook (plus an additional one by Kirkland)\, alongside compositions new and old from Jones. \nDave also composes music for TV\, and has had numerous placements of tracks in productions in the US (‘The Big Bang Theory’\, ‘The Today Show’\, The US Open Golf Tournament)\, in Japan (NHK news and current affairs)\, and the UK (‘University Challenge’\, ‘Location\, Location\, Location’\, ‘Alan Carr’s Adventures with Agatha Christie’\, and many others). \n“Scintillating horn interplay that mixed fire with subtlety\, qualities that Jones also brought to a sparkling piano solo” (JazzMann\, live review 2023). “Solid and deep-delving swing\, especially when the band switched straight into fifth gear\, as on ‘Chief Blackwater’ “ (Jazz Journal\, live review 2023). \nSaxophonist Ben Waghorn is one of Bristol’s finest players with a national reputation – he has worked in London’s West End and on many pop\, TV and film recordings. He has been involved in a range of projects with Keith Tippett\, including ‘Tapestry’\, a piece written by Keith for two saxophone quartets and the BBC singers\, the quartet ‘Work in Progress’ and The Keith Tippett Octet. He can also be heard on recordings with Geoff Eales and Dave Stapleton [Slowly Rolling Camera]. Ben has also recently performed with the BBC Big Band and played in Singapore with the London Concert Orchestra. \nTrumpeter Andy Hague is well known as leader of his own quintet\, Double Standards quartet and Horace Silver tribute Silverado. He also frequently appears at the club on drums. \nBassist Ashley John Long is revered for his astonishing technique\, and alongside his jazz career has a growing reputation as a contemporary classical composer. \nDrummer Ryan Thrupp graduated with a First from the Royal Welsh College jazz degree course a few years back\, and besides his jazz activities plays with funky festival favourites Cut Capers and appeared on live BBC TV from Glastonbury 2023 with afro-beat balafon player N’famady Kouyaté. \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Nye Banfield Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Hailing from rural Leicestershire with Welsh roots\, Nye Banfield is a distinctly creative saxophonist and composer. Now based in Birmingham after a 9 year stint in South London\, Nye is embracing the challenge of forming the next part of his artistic career in a new scene. \nA graduate of Trinity Laban\, Nye combines influences from jazz icons Wayne Shorter\, Ambrose Akinmusire\, and mentor Mark Lockheart\, as well as wider sources of inspiration from the pastoral works of Vaughan Williams to song writing of the likes of Thom Yorke\, Damon Albarn and Paul McCartney. \nNye’s tenor sound\, a focus of his over the last 10 years\, is earthy\, broad and incredibly expressive\, providing a focal point to his band’s combined timbre. Described by Jazzwise as ‘an important emerging voice’\, with a ‘big sound’\, Nye takes you on a vivid journey of richly textured composition and lyrical improvisation. \n‘Trails and Traces’\, the title of Nye’s debut album\, released on vinyl in 2024 received critical acclaim from Jazzwise Magazine – “a long awaited and richly rewarding debut.” Featuring Banger Factory leader Mark Kavuma on trumpet\, the performances from the sextet are richly diverse in influences. An infusion of flavours from 60s Blue Note records\, 90s Radiohead\, 20th century classical music and contemporary New York Jazz combine to create an intensely gripping sound. \nThis will be Nye’s first appearance at The Be-Bop Club. For this outing\, the band features a young and incredibly exciting talent Nick Manz on piano – a recent graduate of Birmingham Conservatoire; Charlie Hutchinson on drums – an undeniably musical and organic drummer who came through the Trinity Laban course alongside Nye; and Shiv Singh on double bass – an ever-present on the Birmingham Jazz scene\, and an other product of Birmingham Conservatoire. Together\, this group creates a gripping and intense experience that rips up the rule books and speaks from a combined beating heart. \nThe set will feature a selection of Nye’s compositions from ‘Trails and Traces’\, as well as brand new work in preparation for the recording of his second album\, and some arrangements of classic standards\, folk songs and pop songs. \n
