SUMMARY:Talk: The Science of DMT & Ayahuasca
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the intersection of science\, shamanism + DMT (the ‘spirit molecule’) and the entities it reveals. Followed by a Q+A. \n\n\n\n\nThis talk explores the intersection between the scientific\, therapeutic\, psychonautic\, and shamanic exploration of the DMT realm and attempts to fuse these disparate and yet overlapping cosmologies. \nN\,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT)\, dubbed the ‘spirit molecule\,’ is an extremely potent short acting psychedelic substance. It is found naturally in the human body and is abundant in other areas of nature. It has been theorised that DMT is released at birth\, near-death experiences and even when we dream! \nThe traditional indigenous use of DMT in the Amazonian visionary decoction\, ayahuasca\, known as the ‘vine of the dead\,’ has a long history of shamanic use to transcend time and space and communicate with the spirits of nature. Most people experiencing a breakthrough dose of DMT report encounters with seemingly sentient\, intelligent and independent entities\, which typically convey a convincing sense of their reality\, such that a recent survey found that of those having such encounters who reported being atheist before their experience\, more than half reported that they were no longer atheist afterwards. \nThis talk explores the intersection between the scientific\, therapeutic\, psychonautic\, and shamanic exploration of the DMT realm and attempts to fuse these disparate and yet overlapping cosmologies. \n  \nDr David Luke is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Greenwich. His research focuses on transpersonal experiences\, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness\, especially via psychedelics\, having published more than 100 academic papers in this area\, including ten books\, most recently Otherworlds: Psychedelics and Exceptional Human Experience. When he is not running clinical drug trials with LSD\, conducting DMT field experiments or observing apparent weather control with Mexican shamans he directs the Ecology\, Cosmos and Consciousness salon and is a cofounder and director of Breaking Convention: International Conference on Psychedelic Consciousness.

SUMMARY:Sophie Moore
DESCRIPTION:UK-based singer-songwriter Sophie Moore has recently made her welcome return to the music scene\, bringing with her a unique brand of alternative country\, brought to life with former members of Nashville-based Lambchop. \n“What a breath of fresh air. You continue to give voice to simple truths. It’s got so much heart\,” former Lambchop pianist Tony Crow shares. \nDuring her musical journey\, in the 1980s\, Sophie Moore toured internationally as part of the London indie group Foggy Cry. She went on to support the likes of Labi Siffre during her solo career whilst also collaborating on a range of other artist’s projects including releasing tracks on Okra Records in the USA in the early 1990s with Jeb Loy Nichols. \nCapturing her sound in the studio\, her well-received single “Closer Than” presented the first taste of her upcoming album Trouble In Mind. Now\, with intimate live shows\, she’s offering a rare opportunity to hear the new material performed live with musicians from the US recording sessions. \nJoined by Houston bassist Mark Riddell and from Nashville\, Tony Crow\, these world class musicians form a transatlantic ensemble that’s set to perform a limited number of  UK  tour dates in June 2026. \nPraise for her first single: \n“A stellar showcase of Sophie Moore’s songwriting talent and performance panache.”\n— Plastic Magazine \n“Closer Than” embodies that powerful message alongside a stirringly melodic production and consuming vocal presence.”\n— Obscure Sound

SUMMARY:Music: Rose's Pawn Shop
DESCRIPTION:American roots music from Southern California live in Bristol \nRose’s Pawn Shop are a 5-piece band with acoustic\, folkie Americana roots and a rock n’ roll vibe. \nFor two decades\, they have evolved their version of modern-day American roots music. It’s an anthemic sound that’s taken the group from their hometown of Los Angeles — where frontman Paul Givant formed the band as a bluegrass-inspired act\, making room for punky tempos and fiddle solos — to venues across the country\, where their sound grew to encompass the sweep of rock & roll\, the sonics of folk music\, and the storytelling of country. \n“Our music is a patchwork of American styles\,” Givant says. “We have country\, rock\, bluegrass\, and folk — all sorts of American musical influences\, and they all go into the Rose’s Pawn Shop sound. \n““American Seams” is a masterclass in resilient roots music. It is a song for the seekers\, the travelers\, and anyone trying to navigate the complexities of modern life without losing their connection to the past.” – Country Music News International \n  \nLearn more about Rose’s Pawn Shop here: Rose’s Pawn Shop  \n  \n\n  \n\nExclusive offer for all Hen & Chicken event ticket holders – July 2026.\n\n25% off your food bill when you reserve a table in our  bar /restaurant\nWhen you book a table and enjoy dinner in our restaurant\, we reserve great seats for you\, ready for the performance\, so you can skip the queue and relax while enjoying your meal. \n\nPlease make your dinner reservation under the same name you used to book your tickets. \n\n*Does not include a ticket to your chosen event. SUMMARY:Talk: Sylvia Plath\, Witchcraft & Radical Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Explore the politics of the witch trials and powerful witch imagery in Sylvia Plath’s poetry. Followed by Q&A. \n\n\n\n\nSylvia Plath is best known for her novel The Bell Jar (1963) and her emotive\, striking poetry. She grew up in Massachusetts\, close to Salem\, a place closely linked to the history of the witch trials. During the 1950s\, renewed public interest in these events influenced Plath’s writing and imagination. Plath often used images of witches and witch trials to explore power\, identity and injustice. Her poetry reflects her concerns about control and authority in society\, while also showing sympathy for those unfairly accused. \nIn this talk\, Dr Dorka Tamás explores how Plath connects with witchcraft and poetic language\, and how the figure of the witch appears in different forms in her work. We’ll look at the contrast between fictional “evil” witches from fairy tales and the real historical victims who were accused of witchcraft\, and punished by patriarchal systems of power. \nDoors open at 7pm\, talk starts at 7:30pm – come down early to grab a good seat! \nFollow us on IG @seedtalks \nSpeaker Bio: \nDr Dorka Tamás is a researcher and teacher based at Royal Holloway\, University of London. She earned her PhD in English literature from the University of Exeter (2022) and herMaster’s degree from the University of Sussex (2018). Dorka is specialised in twentieth-century women’s poetry\, particularly Sylvia Plath\, the legacies of early modern witch-hunt inliterature\, and post-1945 American culture. She has spoken at the Sylvia Plath Literary Festival at Hebden Bridge (2022)\, at numerous academic conferences\, and at the Romancing the Gothic lecture series. She is the author of Sylvia Plath and the Supernatural\, published by Cambridge University Press (2026) and the editor of The New Sylvia Plath Studies\, forthcoming from Cambridge University Press. \nThis talk is 16+

SUMMARY:Talks: AuDHD & Women: Exploring gender bias in neurodivergence
DESCRIPTION:Discover how AuDHD uniquely presents in women in this insightful and neuroaffirming talk. Followed by Q&A. \n\n\n\n\nFor many years\, Autism and ADHD could not be diagnosed together\, with one diagnosis excluding the other. We now know that the two are deeply connected\, with up to 60% of Autistic people also experiencing ADHD. Yet despite growing awareness\, many women continue to be overlooked\, misunderstood\, or misdiagnosed due to outdated assumptions and gender bias. \nThis talk explores the complex reality of AuDHD – not simply having both Autism and ADHD\, but navigating the constant internal “tug of war” between two often conflicting neurotypes. Drawing on current research and lived experience\, we’ll explore topics including masking\, burnout and Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria. \nTaking a neuroaffirming approach throughout\, this talk offers practical insights and supportive strategies to help women better understand themselves\, recognise their strengths\, and advocate for the support they deserve. \nDoors open at 7pm\, talk starts at 7:30pm – come down early to grab a good seat! \nFollow us on IG @seedtalks \nSpeaker Bio: \nDr Emilie Moorhead (DClinPsych\, CPsychol\, BSc) is a Clinical Psychologist with nearly two decades of clinical experience working with Neurodivergent people. SUMMARY:Music: Heathen Apostles
DESCRIPTION:Live music coming to Bristol. \nBorn of the voices of past lives and baptized in the dust bowl dirt\, the Gothic Americana music of the Heathen Apostles harkens back to a bygone chapter of American history. Using contrasting influences such as Bauhaus\, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and The Pogues along with Howlin’ Wolf\, Loretta Lynn (the band covers her classic Fist City) and Bessie Smith\, the Heathen Apostles have created a style of music that at once conjurs both angels and demons\, and will enlighten a darkened soul. \nCrossing paths at a gathering one Indian summer evening\, femme fatale bellower Mather Louth (Radio Noir) and rock n roll veteran Chopper Franklin (The Cramps\, Mau Maus\, Nick Curran & the Lowlifes) quickly uncovered a mutual appreciation for murder balladry\, Americana\, and memento mori. It was not long before a collaboration that sought to marry these interests in a sonic landscape\, the Heathen Apostles\, surfaced. The landscape was further tilled with the addition of Luis Mascaro on violin. \nTheir 7 albums – Boot Hill Hymnal (2013)\, Fire to the Fuse (2015)\, Requiem For a Remix (2016)\, Bloodgrass Vol. 1 & 2 (2018)\, Dust To Dust (2019) Bloodgrass Vol. 3 & 4 (2022) and The In Between (2024) – along with their many EPs and singles (their release The Fall was named Best EP of 2018 by Folk n Rock magazine)\, capture the essence of the Heathen Apostles modus operandi: Southern Gothic Americana imagery surrounded by haunting\, minor-chord melodies\, musical influences including Gothic Roots music\, Bluegrass\, Blues\, and Gypsy Jazz\, all deftly bound together by the band’s dark and sometimes brooding sense of a bygone age. \nLearn more about the Heathen Apostles here:\nHeathen Apostles | Gothic Americana Music Heathen Apostles\n\n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExclusive offer for all Hen & Chicken event ticket holders – August 2026.\n\n25% off your food bill when you reserve a table in our  bar /restaurant\nWhen you book a table and enjoy dinner in our restaurant\, we reserve great seats for you\, ready for the performance\, so you can skip the queue and relax while enjoying your meal. \n\nPlease make your dinner reservation under the same name you used to book your tickets. \n\n*Does not include a ticket to your chosen event. SUMMARY:Talk: The Psychology of Possession & Exorcism
DESCRIPTION:Explore the science behind possession\, exorcism\, and why our brains conjure the paranormal. Followed by Q&A. \n\n\n\nMillions of people around the world – including in the UK today – believe that spirits or demons can take over a living person’s body. But neuroscience tells a very different story. So if a demonic possession isn’t real\, what’s actually going on? \nIt turns out that there’s no single answer. Some historical demonic “possessions” were likely undiagnosed conditions like epilepsy or Tourette’s. Others look remarkably like phenomena we recognise today – dissociative identity disorder\, hypnosis\, speaking in tongues. Then there are the darker cases: possession used as a label against vulnerable people\, with devastating results. This talk unpacks the science\, the psychology\, and the genuinely strange space where belief and the brain collide. \nDoors open at 7pm\, talk starts at 7:30pm – come down early to grab a good seat! \nSpeaker Bio: \nChris French is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Goldsmiths\, University of London\, where he founded the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit — dedicated to understanding why humans have paranormal experiences\, and what’s really behind them. He’s a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry\, and a Patron of Humanists UK. He’s published more than 200 articles and book chapters\, and is a regular contributor to the Guardian and Skeptic magazine. \nHe frequently appears on radio (Curious Cases\, All in the Mind\, Uncanny\, Today\, PM) and television (Newsnight\, BBC Breakfast\, The Big Questions) casting a sceptical eye over paranormal claims. He has also given talks on a wide range of such topics both nationally (the Royal Institution\, New Scientist Live) and internationally (Europe\, Australia\, Taiwan\, USA). His most recent book is The science of weird shit: Why our minds conjure the paranormal\, published by MIT Press in 2024. \n\n  \nLearn more about Seed Talks events here: Seed Talks | Fascinating lectures in relaxed spaces \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n25% off your food bill when you reserve a table in our  bar /restaurant\nWhen you book a table and enjoy dinner in our restaurant\, we reserve great seats for you\, ready for the performance\, so you can skip the queue and relax while enjoying your meal. \n\nPlease make your dinner reservation under the same name you used to book your tickets. \n\n*Does not include a ticket to your chosen event. SUMMARY:Jazz: Martin and Andy Play The Real Book
DESCRIPTION:To launch the 26/27 season\, we start with the front-line pairing of saxophonist Martin Kern and trumpeter Andy Hague. For tonight’s gig\, they will be ditching the printed arrangements and playing a selection of standards and Blue Note era classics they both know from memory\, in homage to the famous Real Books. For the non-players out there\, the Real Books are collections of jazz tunes used for repertoire by many jazz musicians since the early 1980s. \nMartin Kern grew up in Bülach near Zürich in Switzerland and later studied in Paris at the Cèntre d´’Information Musicale and at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern before spending some time in New York. He then moved to Berlin where he became a part oft he vibrant jazz scene. It was there that he recorded his first albums as a bandleader\, “Visions” and “Now Is The Music”. He later moved to Vienna where he recorded his most recent CD “Live At The ORF”\, a live radio concert at the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. Martin’s music is a striking blend of bebop\, hard bop and contemporary jazz\, his sound reflecting those of legendary saxophonists Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon and others. \nPianist Tom Berge is a graduate of Leeds College and besides being incredibly busy with live jazz gigs is building a career as a composer\, having written music for the BBC\, Sky\, ITV and other production companies. \nWill Harris holds a Masters in jazz bass from the Royal Academy\, but is also a medical doctor. We’ve seen a little less of drummer Ryan Thrupp recently since he is now based in London\, so great to have him back for this opening gig. \n \nBristol jazz saxophonist Martin Kern – www.martinkernmusic.com \n  \n25% off your food bill when you reserve a table in our  bar /restaurant\nWhen you book a table and enjoy dinner in our restaurant\, we reserve great seats for you\, ready for the performance\, so you can skip the queue and relax while enjoying your meal. \n\nPlease make your dinner reservation under the same name you used to book your tickets. \n\n*Does not include a ticket to your chosen event. SUMMARY:Comedy: Mark Thomas - 40 IN STAND-UP YEARS
DESCRIPTION:What?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic. \nSo\, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years\, won 8 awards for performing\, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself\, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4)\, written 6 books and 5 play scripts\, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4\, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4\, sued the police (and won) 3 times\, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. \nIf that’s not enough\, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank\, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance\, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right\, there’s more\, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. So let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really\, really good at. \nSo basically expect a taster menu of government and personal mayhem\, jokes\, rants and a personal state of the nation broadcast as he tries to turn ‘what the f*ck is going on’ into a cogent hour of stand-up. \n★★★★★ “Once again shooting laughter-laden political bullets from the lip” THE RECS

SUMMARY:Jazz: From A to Z – The music of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims
DESCRIPTION:Al Cohn and Zoot Sims were one of the great tenor sax partnerships in jazz. In a series of albums beginning in the late fifties\, along with regular spots at the Half Note in New York\, they developed a quintet sound based on a joyful approach to performing\, rooted in swing\, informed by bebop and growing from their experiences together in the Woody Herman band. Al Cohn’s arrangements are super hip and not performed all that often. They often create the feeling of a ‘mini-big band’\, with driving swing and tight ensemble playing\, along with space for the soloists to shine individually and in duet. This is an exciting challenge for a band and a hugely enjoyable experience for the audience. \nFor this brand-new project\, Luke Annesley has assembled some great musicians\, all well-known to Bristol audiences (and beyond)\, to recreate Cohn’s arrangements\, which he has meticulously transcribed. With Ruth Hammond alongside Luke himself on tenor saxes\, the band also features Tom Berge on piano\, Riaan Vosloo on double bass and Scott Hammond on drums. Luke has a story about meeting Zoot Sims when he was 14 which he’ll bend your ear about given an opportunity\, but probably even better just to sit back and enjoy an evening’s homage to the music of Al and Zoot! \nRead more about the music of Al Cohn & Zoot Sims here: https://nationaljazzarchive.org.uk/explore/interviews/1634252-al-cohn-and-zoot-sims \n \n  \n25% off your food bill when you reserve a table in our  bar /restaurant\nWhen you book a table and enjoy dinner in our restaurant\, we reserve great seats for you\, ready for the performance\, so you can skip the queue and relax while enjoying your meal. \n\nPlease make your dinner reservation under the same name you used to book your tickets. \n\n*Does not include a ticket to your chosen event.
