SUMMARY:Talk: Horror Movies\, Sexuality & Power
DESCRIPTION:Discover how horror movies reveal hidden stories of sexuality\, fear and identity across classic and modern cinema. Followed by Q&A. \n\n\n\nSex and horror have always been intertwined. While the genre has often been criticised as exploitative or moralising – particularly toward women – it has also created a powerful space for audiences to explore their own stories of desire\, fear and identity. \nIn this thought-provoking talk\, Katie Evans draws on psychoanalysis\, queer theory and film history to uncover the hidden narratives within some of our most beloved horror films. From classic monsters like Dracula and The Bride of Frankenstein to Psycho\, Hellraiser and It Follows\, we’ll examine how themes of shame\, pleasure and survival play out on screen. \nWhether you’re drawn to horror\, fascinated by identity\, or curious about sexuality\, this talk invites you to consider what horror narratives really represent. Together\, we’ll explore ideas on sexual development\, kink and queerness – and how horror films can reflect the parts of ourselves we’re taught to hide\, revealing our complex relationship with otherness and what we can fear is the “monstrous” within. \nDoors open at 7pm\, talk starts at 7:30pm – come down early to grab a good seat! \nSpeaker Bio: \nKatie Evans is a BACP-accredited therapist and self-confessed horror nerd. Her passion for all things spooky began in childhood and continued through her studies in music\, film\, and media at Liverpool University\, before moving into the field of mental health. She holds advanced accreditation in GSRD Therapy (Gender\, Sexuality\, and Relationship Diversity). In addition\, Katie has presented at conferences across Europe and has spoken for organisations including The Maudsley\, the British Psychological Society\, The NHS\, LGBT Foundation\, and HMPPS\, among others. She is also a registered guest lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University. An advocate for using pop culture in psychotherapy\, Katie previously hosted The Mental Health Monsters Podcast and continues to explore how fictional narratives – especially those from the horror genre – can help us better understand ourselves. \nThis talk is 18+

SUMMARY:Jazz: John Donegan Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Pianist John Donegan has visited annually to promote his series of sextet albums\, but this year has returned to quartet format for his latest CD Interfuse\, recorded in Dublin\, May 2025. The recording features the cream of Ireland’s jazz scene including former Van Morrison saxophonist Richie Buckley\, but as on previous occasions tonight we present John’s music with a specially formed Bristol version. \nFor the first time John will be joined by Dan Newberry on sax duties – Dan is a firebrand player whose musical maturity belies his relative youth and his playing never fails to impress. The rock solid rhythm team of Chris Jones and Ryan Thrupp have played for John’s previous sextet visits. \nOriginally from Cork in Ireland\, John Donegan lived in Bristol during the 90s and was a mainstay of the jazz scene here before work took him to London. Now retired from his day job\, over the past few years John has been able to dedicate his time exclusively to music and has released several recordings demonstrating his compositional skills including his three sextet albums Shadows Linger [2022]\, Light Streams [2023] and We Will Meet Again\, Sometime [2024]. \nOnce again John has gained a hard to achieve four star review in Jazzwise Magazine “In short\, superb music; and brilliant production” alongside other excellent reviews you will find in Jazz Journal\, UK Jazz News and All About Jazz.

SUMMARY:Talk: The Hidden World of Fairies & Women
DESCRIPTION:Step into Britain’s hidden fairy realm and meet the powerful Queen behind its myths\, magic and forgotten stories. Followed by Q&A. \n\n\n\n\nOnce\, there was a realm ruled by a powerful Queen – a figure who could shape her appearance\, take lovers\, and command a kingdom beneath the earth that included the dead. Known by many names\, she was most often called the Queen of the Fairies. \nIn this talk\, we’ll explore Britain’s lost fairy traditions through this enigmatic figure. From early medieval pagan beliefs – including links to the goddess Diana – to later connections with saints and angels\, we’ll trace how her story evolved across time. We’ll uncover accounts of Scottish witches said to draw power from her\, alongside those who feared her influence – and explore why the Presbyterian Kirk sought to suppress these stories. Finally\, we’ll examine what these stories reveal about women\, power and belief in Britain’s past. \nSpeaker Bio: \nDiane Purkiss is Professor of English at the University of Oxford\, and a fellow of Keble College. She has published on witchcraft\, fairies\, and also on the English Civil War\, the occasion of England’s biggest witchhunt. She has been in more than a dozen television documentaries; she even has an IMdb entry and a Wikipedia page… She has spoken to general audiences at numerous literary festivals and to many local history societies.

SUMMARY:Talk: The Science of DMT & Ayahuasca
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the intersection of science\, shamanism + DMT (the ‘spirit molecule’) and the entities it reveals. Followed by a Q+A. \n\n\n\n\nThis talk explores the intersection between the scientific\, therapeutic\, psychonautic\, and shamanic exploration of the DMT realm and attempts to fuse these disparate and yet overlapping cosmologies. \nN\,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT)\, dubbed the ‘spirit molecule\,’ is an extremely potent short acting psychedelic substance. It is found naturally in the human body and is abundant in other areas of nature. It has been theorised that DMT is released at birth\, near-death experiences and even when we dream! \nThe traditional indigenous use of DMT in the Amazonian visionary decoction\, ayahuasca\, known as the ‘vine of the dead\,’ has a long history of shamanic use to transcend time and space and communicate with the spirits of nature. Most people experiencing a breakthrough dose of DMT report encounters with seemingly sentient\, intelligent and independent entities\, which typically convey a convincing sense of their reality\, such that a recent survey found that of those having such encounters who reported being atheist before their experience\, more than half reported that they were no longer atheist afterwards. \nThis talk explores the intersection between the scientific\, therapeutic\, psychonautic\, and shamanic exploration of the DMT realm and attempts to fuse these disparate and yet overlapping cosmologies. \n  \nDr David Luke is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Greenwich. His research focuses on transpersonal experiences\, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness\, especially via psychedelics\, having published more than 100 academic papers in this area\, including ten books\, most recently Otherworlds: Psychedelics and Exceptional Human Experience. When he is not running clinical drug trials with LSD\, conducting DMT field experiments or observing apparent weather control with Mexican shamans he directs the Ecology\, Cosmos and Consciousness salon and is a cofounder and director of Breaking Convention: International Conference on Psychedelic Consciousness.

SUMMARY:Sophie Moore
DESCRIPTION:UK-based singer-songwriter Sophie Moore has recently made her welcome return to the music scene\, bringing with her a unique brand of alternative country\, brought to life with former members of Nashville-based Lambchop. \n“What a breath of fresh air. You continue to give voice to simple truths. It’s got so much heart\,” former Lambchop pianist Tony Crow shares. \nDuring her musical journey\, in the 1980s\, Sophie Moore toured internationally as part of the London indie group Foggy Cry. She went on to support the likes of Labi Siffre during her solo career whilst also collaborating on a range of other artist’s projects including releasing tracks on Okra Records in the USA in the early 1990s with Jeb Loy Nichols. \nCapturing her sound in the studio\, her well-received single “Closer Than” presented the first taste of her upcoming album Trouble In Mind. Now\, with intimate live shows\, she’s offering a rare opportunity to hear the new material performed live with musicians from the US recording sessions. \nJoined by Houston bassist Mark Riddell and from Nashville\, Tony Crow\, these world class musicians form a transatlantic ensemble that’s set to perform a limited number of  UK  tour dates in June 2026. \nPraise for her first single: \n“A stellar showcase of Sophie Moore’s songwriting talent and performance panache.”\n— Plastic Magazine \n“Closer Than” embodies that powerful message alongside a stirringly melodic production and consuming vocal presence.”\n— Obscure Sound

SUMMARY:Music: Rose's Pawn Shop
DESCRIPTION:American roots music from Southern California \nRose’s Pawn Shop are a 5-piece band with acoustic\, folkie Americana roots and a rock n’ roll vibe. \nFor two decades\, they have evolved their version of modern-day American roots music. It’s an anthemic sound that’s taken the group from their hometown of Los Angeles — where frontman Paul Givant formed the band as a bluegrass-inspired act\, making room for punky tempos and fiddle solos — to venues across the country\, where their sound grew to encompass the sweep of rock & roll\, the sonics of folk music\, and the storytelling of country. \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Talk: Sylvia Plath\, Witchcraft & Radical Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Explore the politics of the witch trials and powerful witch imagery in Sylvia Plath’s poetry. Followed by Q&A. \n\n\n\n\nSylvia Plath is best known for her novel The Bell Jar (1963) and her emotive\, striking poetry. She grew up in Massachusetts\, close to Salem\, a place closely linked to the history of the witch trials. During the 1950s\, renewed public interest in these events influenced Plath’s writing and imagination. Plath often used images of witches and witch trials to explore power\, identity and injustice. Her poetry reflects her concerns about control and authority in society\, while also showing sympathy for those unfairly accused. \nIn this talk\, Dr Dorka Tamás explores how Plath connects with witchcraft and poetic language\, and how the figure of the witch appears in different forms in her work. We’ll look at the contrast between fictional “evil” witches from fairy tales and the real historical victims who were accused of witchcraft\, and punished by patriarchal systems of power. \nDoors open at 7pm\, talk starts at 7:30pm – come down early to grab a good seat! \nFollow us on IG @seedtalks \nSpeaker Bio: \nDr Dorka Tamás is a researcher and teacher based at Royal Holloway\, University of London. She earned her PhD in English literature from the University of Exeter (2022) and herMaster’s degree from the University of Sussex (2018). Dorka is specialised in twentieth-century women’s poetry\, particularly Sylvia Plath\, the legacies of early modern witch-hunt inliterature\, and post-1945 American culture. She has spoken at the Sylvia Plath Literary Festival at Hebden Bridge (2022)\, at numerous academic conferences\, and at the Romancing the Gothic lecture series. She is the author of Sylvia Plath and the Supernatural\, published by Cambridge University Press (2026) and the editor of The New Sylvia Plath Studies\, forthcoming from Cambridge University Press. \nThis talk is 16+

SUMMARY:Music: Heathen Apostles
DESCRIPTION:Born of the voices of past lives and baptized in the dust bowl dirt\, the Gothic Americana music of the Heathen Apostles harkens back to a bygone chapter of American history. Using contrasting influences such as Bauhaus\, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and The Pogues along with Howlin’ Wolf\, Loretta Lynn (the band covers her classic Fist City) and Bessie Smith\, the Heathen Apostles have created a style of music that at once conjurs both angels and demons\, and will enlighten a darkened soul. \nCrossing paths at a gathering one Indian summer evening\, femme fatale bellower Mather Louth (Radio Noir) and rock n roll veteran Chopper Franklin (The Cramps\, Mau Maus\, Nick Curran & the Lowlifes) quickly uncovered a mutual appreciation for murder balladry\, Americana\, and memento mori. It was not long before a collaboration that sought to marry these interests in a sonic landscape\, the Heathen Apostles\, surfaced. The landscape was further tilled with the addition of Luis Mascaro on violin. \nTheir 7 albums – Boot Hill Hymnal (2013)\, Fire to the Fuse (2015)\, Requiem For a Remix (2016)\, Bloodgrass Vol. 1 & 2 (2018)\, Dust To Dust (2019) Bloodgrass Vol. 3 & 4 (2022) and The In Between (2024) – along with their many EPs and singles (their release The Fall was named Best EP of 2018 by Folk n Rock magazine)\, capture the essence of the Heathen Apostles modus operandi: Southern Gothic Americana imagery surrounded by haunting\, minor-chord melodies\, musical influences including Gothic Roots music\, Bluegrass\, Blues\, and Gypsy Jazz\, all deftly bound together by the band’s dark and sometimes brooding sense of a bygone age. \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Comedy: Mark Thomas - 40 IN STAND-UP YEARS
DESCRIPTION:What?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic. \nSo\, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years\, won 8 awards for performing\, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself\, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4)\, written 6 books and 5 play scripts\, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4\, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4\, sued the police (and won) 3 times\, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. \nIf that’s not enough\, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank\, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance\, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right\, there’s more\, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. So let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really\, really good at. \nSo basically expect a taster menu of government and personal mayhem\, jokes\, rants and a personal state of the nation broadcast as he tries to turn ‘what the f*ck is going on’ into a cogent hour of stand-up. \n★★★★★ “Once again shooting laughter-laden political bullets from the lip” THE RECS
