DESCRIPTION:To launch the 26/27 season\, we start with the front-line pairing of saxophonist Martin Kern and trumpeter Andy Hague. For tonight’s gig\, they will be ditching the printed arrangements and playing a selection of standards and Blue Note era classics they both know from memory\, in homage to the famous Real Books. For the non-players out there\, the Real Books are collections of jazz tunes used for repertoire by many jazz musicians since the early 1980s. \nMartin Kern grew up in Bülach near Zürich in Switzerland and later studied in Paris at the Cèntre d´’Information Musicale and at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern before spending some time in New York. He then moved to Berlin where he became a part oft he vibrant jazz scene. It was there that he recorded his first albums as a bandleader\, “Visions” and “Now Is The Music”. He later moved to Vienna where he recorded his most recent CD “Live At The ORF”\, a live radio concert at the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. Martin’s music is a striking blend of bebop\, hard bop and contemporary jazz\, his sound reflecting those of legendary saxophonists Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon and others. \nPianist Tom Berge is a graduate of Leeds College and besides being incredibly busy with live jazz gigs is building a career as a composer\, having written music for the BBC\, Sky\, ITV and other production companies. \nWill Harris holds a Masters in jazz bass from the Royal Academy\, but is also a medical doctor. DESCRIPTION:For our first touring band of the season we’re pleased to present for the first time saxophonist Sam Glaser\, with a band of current London luminaries who between them have been performing with artists such as Alex Hitchcock\, Emma Rawicz\, Ant Law\, Kit Downes and more. \nSam Glaser is an alto saxophonist\, composer and bandleader based in London\, UK. He is a virtuosic improviser and a unique voice on the UK jazz scene\, and his warm and distinctive saxophone sound\, paired with lyrical\, energetic\, and emotive playing\, have led to renown amongst musicians and listeners alike. Sam’s saxophone playing is firmly grounded in the history of jazz music but takes great inspiration from modern masters including Will Vinson\, Chris Potter\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, and Ben Wendel. \nSam graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2016 with a 1st class honours degree in jazz saxophone\, where he studied with some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians including Julian Siegel\, Iain Ballamy\, Nikki Iles\, James Allsopp\, Gareth Lockrane\, and Tom Cawley. He was also a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra between 2013 and 2018\, where he held the principle alto chair for two years and during which time performed with artists including Gregory Porter\, Clare Teal\, Zoe Rahman\, and Jason Yarde. He was also a featured soloist on the studio album “NYJO 50”\, released on Whirlwind Records in 2015. \nHighly sought after\, Sam has performed with leading musicians and bands including the Tom Smith big band\, Patchwork Jazz Orchestra\, the Gareth Lockrane Big Bang\, Adam Woodcock’s Meridian\, and the Tom Niblock big band. SUMMARY:Jazz: From A to Z – The music of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims
DESCRIPTION:Al Cohn and Zoot Sims were one of the great tenor sax partnerships in jazz. In a series of albums beginning in the late fifties\, along with regular spots at the Half Note in New York\, they developed a quintet sound based on a joyful approach to performing\, rooted in swing\, informed by bebop and growing from their experiences together in the Woody Herman band. Al Cohn’s arrangements are super hip and not performed all that often. They often create the feeling of a ‘mini-big band’\, with driving swing and tight ensemble playing\, along with space for the soloists to shine individually and in duet. This is an exciting challenge for a band and a hugely enjoyable experience for the audience. \nFor this brand-new project\, Luke Annesley has assembled some great musicians\, all well-known to Bristol audiences (and beyond)\, to recreate Cohn’s arrangements\, which he has meticulously transcribed. With Ruth Hammond alongside Luke himself on tenor saxes\, the band also features Tom Berge on piano\, Riaan Vosloo on double bass and Scott Hammond on drums. Ticket purchasers will be contacted. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe welcome Angel back to the intimate surroundings of the Hen & Chicken Studio\, with her hypnotic delivery and spellbinding style\, for a trio performance\, including guitarist Joe Wilkins and on drums\, Matt Stockham-Brown. \nAngel Snow has just completed a successful 14-date UK tour promoting her most recent release – a Tom Waits tribute album titled Yesterday Is Here. Snow’s catalogue spans four full-length records over the course of 15 years and eludes quick and easy categorisation. \nResisting all attempts to pigeonhole her style as ‘Americana’\, Snow leaned heavily on her early teenaged electronic influences for her sophomore effort\, choosing to work with UK-based producer Lee Groves (Trent Reznor). The result was Magnetic – a collection of lush\, ambient\, electronic-driven songs that landed her a record deal with indie powerhouse Nettwerk Records. Magnetic would go on to receive critical praise worldwide and deliver the viral underground hit ‘Secret.’ \nSnow remained with Nettwerk for two follow-up EPs Arrows and Arrows (Stripped)\, produced by Ben Cramer\, aka Old Sea Brigade. With Stein at the helm\, Snow delivered a Covid-inspired collection of songs heavily weighted by the themes of loss\, claustrophobia\, and re-imagined trauma. \nMost notable is Snow’s starkly beautiful cover of Peter Gabriel’s ominous environmentalist warnings in “Here Comes the Flood.” Snow chose the song as a metaphor for the emotional surge arising when faced with intense loss. DESCRIPTION:Cristina Mariani is a rising stand-up comedian\, with a quirky\, dark sense of humour. She performs regularly at her home club The Comedy Mothership in Austin\, Texas. She has toured with Theo Von and opened for big names including Tom Segura\, Christina Pazsitzky\, Ron White\, Harland Williams\, Brian Simpson\, Ari Shaffir and Freddie Gibbs. \nShe has made several appearances on “Kill Tony” and many of her stand up videos have garnered millions of views.
