SUMMARY:Jazz: Yetii
DESCRIPTION:Alex Veitch – piano\, Ashley John Long – bass\, Alex Goodyear – drums \nYetii return to the club to celebrate the release of their second album Inner Worlds. \nInner Worlds is about what goes on beneath the surface. Each composition immerses the listener in a different experience or state of mind. Singing melodies open and shift to reveal their inner workings. Solos morph into group improvisations: a shared single voice that ebbs and flows between and within the band’s original compositions. The album is a distillation and documentation of the sound we have formed over time at our monthly residency in Bristol over the last 7 years. \n2025 has been a big year in the world of Yetii. They played their concert hall debut to a sold out 400-strong crowd at St. George’s in Bristol\, supported The Bad Plus on their recent UK tour\, and have sold out each of their monthly gigs at The Greenbank in Bristol\, including collaborations with Parliamentary Award winner Arun Ghosh\, Get the Blessing’s Jake McMurchie\, and most recently Edition’s Ant Law. \n“all played with great beauty and sensitivity… a standing ovation greeted the end of their set ” Jazzwise\n“A performance that enthralled and delighted the audience ★★★★★” The Jazz Mann\n“Fluent and wildly inventive improvisers” UK Jazz News \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Nick Malcolm and Martin Kolarides Quartetand Martin Kolarides
DESCRIPTION:Nick Malcolm – trumpet\, Martin Kolarides – guitar\, Greg Cordez – bass\, Mark Whitlam – drums \nTrumpeter Nick Malcolm should be well known to Bristol audiences and has a growing national reputation. A fearless and inventive soloist\, he moves effortlessly between completely free improvisation and blistering hard-bop. He is known for his work with Out Front\, Dee Byrne’s Outlines\, Rebecca Nash and has recently ended a long tenure with the Jazz Defenders. \nGuitarist Martin Kolarides is yet another fine musician who has been drawn from London into the mysterious jazz vortex of Frome in Somerset. A graduate of London’s Trinity College of Music\, Martin has established himself as one of the most creative\, versatile and hard working musicians in the UK. Equally at home playing rock\, blues\, swing and jazz\, Martin has worked with many outstanding musicians who have inspired his love of many styles including jazz\, folk\, Americana\, experimental pop and electronica to name just a few. In addition to writing for and directing his own groups\, Martin is a seasoned session player with numerous jazz and pop credits to his name… recent notable artists have included mainstream TV appearances with US singer-songwriter Valerie June as well as being the touring guitarist for another US act\, chart topping jazz/R&B singer Lizz Wright. Martin has also recorded two top 20 albums and performs internationally with English close harmony vocal trio The Puppini Sisters. He has also recently completed a European tour with US singer and Snarky Puppy guest vocalist Shayna Steele\, and is one of the founding members of electronic neo-soul outfit HUGH. Martin also produces music under the guise of ‘Sinking Monolith’ and has numerous writing and remix credits to his name. \nIt’s great to welcome back bassist Greg Cordez to the live scene. Having recorded three albums as band leader and composer\, two of which were recorded in the USA with top-flight American players\, Greg has rather retreated in to academia since Covid\, concentrating on his teaching job at BIMM music college – but now he’s back and ready for a new chapter. \nDrummer Mark Whitlam also tutors at BIMM and is currently working on his PhD. One of Bristol’s busiest musicians\, Mark has worked with major jazz names such as Andy Sheppard\, Iain Ballamy and Jason Rebello.

SUMMARY:Music: Lilly Hiatt
DESCRIPTION:The search for answers—where she’s been\, who she’s become\, what it all means—lies at the heart of Hiatt’s striking new album\, Forever. Written and recorded in Hiatt’s new home just outside Nashville\, the collection grapples with growth and change\, escape and anxiety\, self-loathing and self-love. \nThe songs are intensely vulnerable here\, full of diaristic snapshots and deeply personal ruminations\, but they’re also broad invitations to find yourself in Hiatt’s unflinching emotional excavations\, to see your own humanity reflected back in her pursuit of something larger than herself. Hiatt cut the album with her husband\, Coley Hinson\, who produced and played most of the instruments on the record\, and the result is a raw\, unvarnished work of love and trust that walks the line between alt-rock muscle and singer/songwriter sensitivity\, a bold\, guitar-driven\, at times psychedelic exploration of maturity and adulthood from an artist who wants you to know you’re not alone\, no matter how lost you may feel. \n  \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Music: Jon Wilks
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed singer\, guitarist and storyteller Jon Wilks is known for his work at the intersection of traditional folk and contemporary narrative songwriting. Recognised with a double-page feature in global Guitarist magazine\, Jon is a guitarist of exceptional calibre. Jon’s most recent solo release was named Folk Album of the Month in The Guardian and his stand-out talent has been applauded by other publications such as Uncut Magazine and Klofmag. Having spent recent years delving deep into traditional ballads and broadsides\, his latest album\, Could You Be the One?\, marks a return to original material — songs that reflect on time\, memory and belonging. Live shows will also draw from Jon’s rich back catalogue of traditional material\, reworked through the lens of the full band. \nJon is joined by a group of close musical allies; Jon Nice on keyboards\, electric guitars and backing vocals — a trusted musical companion since they met in Japan in 2007. On bass is Rich Davies\, one of Jon’s oldest friends; they first played together as teenagers in the Midlands and are reuniting musically for the first time since 2003. On drums is Laurence Hunt\, known for his work with the Wayward Band and Hack Poets Guild. He and Jon first crossed paths in the Jim Moray Band in 2023. \n\nRecent Press for Jon and his music: \n‘Jon’s a badman fingerpicking guitarist and leading exponent of the songs of Old Albion’. Carl Barat\, The Libertines \n‘Wilks proves once again what a stand-out talent he really is. There is an honesty and compassion in Wilks’ writing and performance\, which is entirely charming’. Klofmag \n‘A scholar’s ear for vernacular and a dashing sense of verve on fingerpicked guitar’. Uncut Magazine \n‘Sublime songwriting. Wilks is a rather special performer.’ Folk Radio \n  \nNeedless Alley | Jon Wilks \n

DESCRIPTION:Greg Sterland – tenor sax\, Pasquale Votino – bass\, Paolo Adamo – drums \nThis trio were heard recently hosting one of the jam sessions at the Stag and Hounds and impressed greatly with their well structured set and careful use of the chordless instrumentation. \nVery much a cooperative venture\, the compositions developed as a group make full use of the available pallet of sounds. You can hear the earthy influence of the down town New York scene as well as the avant garde. \nShades of Tim Berne\, Chris Speed et al as well as a plethora of influences from within the more straight ahead jazz tradition also – all played with heart and beauty in this highly interactive and musical trio.

SUMMARY:Jazz: James Borland Quartet
DESCRIPTION:James Borland – trumpet\, Nick Manz – piano\, Ben Love – bass\, Kai Chareunsy – drums. \nTrumpeter James Borland first visited the club in Nov 23 as part of the Birmingham based sextet Abacus led by Liam Brennan\, and impressed greatly with his warm sound and inventive phrasing. James was recently seen in national media performing with Bostin Brass\, the band picked to lead the funeral cortège for Ozzy Osbourne. \nOne of the most in-demand young musicians of the vibrant Birmingham jazz scene\, his characterful improvising speaks both of his love of the jazz tradition and also the forward-thinking melodicism of contemporary NY figureheads such as Ambrose Akinmusire and Immanuel Wilkins. His quartet brings together an impressive young rhythm section who share his love of free-flowing\, exciting jazz music\, featuring sought-after bass and drum team Ben Love and Kai Chareunsy\, and BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist Nick Manz on piano. The quartet play James’ original music\, alongside carefully selected favourites from jazz pioneers. \n

DESCRIPTION:Kevin Figes – alto sax/flute\, Dale Hambridge – piano\, Matthew Read – bass\, Andy Hague – drums \nDue to illness\, poor Brigitte Beraha has had to cancel the first part of her tour\, so many thanks for the musicians above for stepping in at short notice. The great thing about the Bristol scene is that it is often possible to put a really strong line-up together at short notice. \nKevin Figes is of course a stalwart of the scene\, endlessly creative and productive with his many projects\, Pig Records label and now short film ventures. The band will probably mainly play standard material\, but perhaps a couple of Kevin’s original tunes if a quick rehearsal is managed beforehand – just to be clear this line-up has been assembled especially for tonight’s gig and is not one of Kevin’s regular projects.

SUMMARY:Music: St Catherine's Child
DESCRIPTION:ST CATHERINE’S CHILD:  “Softly stunning\, mesmerising country-tinged indie” Holler \nTransatlantic singer-songwriter Ilana Zsigmond AKA St Catherine’s Child is one of the rising stars of the Indie-Folk/Americana scene. She was invited into the Recording Academy as one of their ‘Class of 2024”. \nHaving signed to TRO Essex Music and Shamus Records in New York in late 2024\, her debut album is This Might Affect You. The album’s songs tell the deeply personal and chronological story of enduring and recovering from the illness and death of her father. The A side chronicles the time leading up to his death\, and the B side explores the aftermath of his passing and how she processed it. \nZsigmond decided to reach out to others who also had recently experienced loss and ask them to collaborate\, and as a result\, 10 of the 12 songs on the album are co-written with other songwriters. The songs on the album defy traditional genre classification and range from gun ballad to sea shanty to punk and beyond. The album’s title\, This Might Affect You\, is a reference to a construction planning notice Zsigmond saw during her father’s illness that encapsulated everything she was experiencing and processing\, and how it affected her and everyone around her. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Ben has also recently performed with the BBC Big Band and played in Singapore with the London Concert Orchestra. Pianist Jim Blomfield has been a vital part of Bristol’s jazz scene for many years and has accompanied many of the UK’s best known players. Bassist Riaan Vosloo works regularly with saxophonist Ed Jones and runs the post-grad programme at BIMM Bristol music college. Drummer Mark Whitlam is head of the drum department at BIMM college and has played with big names such as Andy Sheppard and Iain Ballamy besides composing for his own projects. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Music: The Alan Fletcher Band - Back To School Album Tour
DESCRIPTION:Alan Fletcher is a household name in the UK because of his portrayal of Dr Karl Kennedy in the popular Australian drama Neighbours. Thousands of people also know Alan’s work as a successful musician\, first as a Rock artist with his band Waiting Room and lately as a fine Americana and Alt/Country singer-songwriter. \nIn 2024 Alan and his five-piece band promoted his album The Point on a sold-out 22 date UK tour \nIn 2025 Alan and the band return to the UK for a 32-date tour promoting his upcoming album Back to School. \nAlan’s songs are a blend of humour (For the Love of Lager\, How Good is Bed\, I’ve Got a Crush on Susie K) and poignant reflections on love and life (Hey You\, The Point\, Back to School) \nDon’t miss the opportunity to enjoy Alan’s songs and meet a TV legend up close and personal. \nWhat they say about Alan’s gigs. \nEngaging\, delightful\, wistful and original\, The Point is classically crafted whilst contemporarily composed. It’s an album that covers a wide spectrum of emotions\, that shakes and stirs with infectious honesty. – The Manc Review (mancreview.com)\nOverall\, Alan Fletcher delivered a show that surprised in the best possible way. He had a fantastic vocal quality throughout as well as some solid guitar playing\, but what elevated the evening for me was the balance he struck between thoughtfulness and fun and the strength of his connection with the crowd. It’s safe to say he’s going to appeal to music fans way beyond just those who know him from ‘Neighbours’.\nEntertainment-focus.com – Laura Cooney \nAlthough the essence of the show is the great Americana of Alan’s songs and delivery\, Jen added some lovely\, polished vocals and the whole band was exceptional … it is always great to see such a high-quality band having such a ball on stage … and the audience rightly loving every second. Five hugely talented musicians and singers delivering a truly outstanding set of Americana … up there with the finest gigs ever … loved every second … richly entertaining show … doesn’t get much better!! \nRich Wakefield Leicester Musician review 2024 \n
