SUMMARY:Jazz: Ray D'Inverno's Quintessential Groove
DESCRIPTION:We’re pleased to welcome back veteran pianist Ray D’Inverno who last visited in Oct 2024. The previous year 2023 was a milestone for Ray as he reached 80 years of age\, and celebrated his birthday with a sell-out gala concert at Southampton’s Turner Sims concert hall featuring Quintessential Groove with special guests including his son Mark D’Inverno [also a pianist] and tenor sax star Ed Jones. \nQuintessential Groove has been booked for Swanage Jazz Festival in July 26\, so this is something of a warm-up gig for that prestigious event. \nRay is based near Dorchester\, but for many years ran Southampton Jazz Club alongside his career as a Professor of Mathematics and General Relativity at Southampton University. Ray has performed alongside many of the UK’s greatest players\, and has released recordings featuring Jim Mullen\, Stan Sulzmann\, Tony Roberts and many more. He has been leading his current band Quintessential Groove for the past decade. Tonight they will be playing music from their recent CD release All In The Same Boat\, which features eleven of Ray’s melodic but rhythmically varied compositions. \nThe band consists of highly rated Canadian saxophonist Terry Quinney [Sound of BlueNote]\, Andy Hague – trumpet\, Ray D’Inverno – piano\, with Bristol’s Will Harris stepping in on bass. We’re also very pleased to have local legend Tony Orrell guesting on drums\, who whilst a regular fixture up at Bristol Music Club in Clifton has not played at the Be-Bop for many years. \nYou can listen to Ray’s extensive back catalogue on Bandcamp. \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: John Donegan Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Pianist John Donegan has visited annually to promote his series of sextet albums\, but this year has returned to quartet format for his latest CD Interfuse\, recorded in Dublin\, May 2025. The recording features the cream of Ireland’s jazz scene including former Van Morrison saxophonist Richie Buckley\, but as on previous occasions tonight we present John’s music with a specially formed Bristol version. \nFor the first time John will be joined by Dan Newberry on sax duties – Dan is a firebrand player whose musical maturity belies his relative youth and his playing never fails to impress. The rock solid rhythm team of Chris Jones and Ryan Thrupp have played for John’s previous sextet visits. \nOriginally from Cork in Ireland\, John Donegan lived in Bristol during the 90s and was a mainstay of the jazz scene here before work took him to London. Now retired from his day job\, over the past few years John has been able to dedicate his time exclusively to music and has released several recordings demonstrating his compositional skills including his three sextet albums Shadows Linger [2022]\, Light Streams [2023] and We Will Meet Again\, Sometime [2024]. \nOnce again John has gained a hard to achieve four star review in Jazzwise Magazine “In short\, superb music; and brilliant production” alongside other excellent reviews you will find in Jazz Journal\, UK Jazz News and All About Jazz.

SUMMARY:Sophie Moore
DESCRIPTION:UK-based singer-songwriter Sophie Moore has recently made her welcome return to the music scene\, bringing with her a unique brand of alternative country\, brought to life with former members of Nashville-based Lambchop. \n“What a breath of fresh air. You continue to give voice to simple truths. It’s got so much heart\,” former Lambchop pianist Tony Crow shares. \nDuring her musical journey\, in the 1980s\, Sophie Moore toured internationally as part of the London indie group Foggy Cry. She went on to support the likes of Labi Siffre during her solo career whilst also collaborating on a range of other artist’s projects including releasing tracks on Okra Records in the USA in the early 1990s with Jeb Loy Nichols. \nCapturing her sound in the studio\, her well-received single “Closer Than” presented the first taste of her upcoming album Trouble In Mind. Now\, with intimate live shows\, she’s offering a rare opportunity to hear the new material performed live with musicians from the US recording sessions. \nJoined by Houston bassist Mark Riddell and from Nashville\, Tony Crow\, these world class musicians form a transatlantic ensemble that’s set to perform a limited number of  UK  tour dates in June 2026. \nPraise for her first single: \n“A stellar showcase of Sophie Moore’s songwriting talent and performance panache.”\n— Plastic Magazine \n“Closer Than” embodies that powerful message alongside a stirringly melodic production and consuming vocal presence.”\n— Obscure Sound

DESCRIPTION:American roots music from Southern California \nRose’s Pawn Shop are a 5-piece band with acoustic\, folkie Americana roots and a rock n’ roll vibe. \nFor two decades\, they have evolved their version of modern-day American roots music. It’s an anthemic sound that’s taken the group from their hometown of Los Angeles — where frontman Paul Givant formed the band as a bluegrass-inspired act\, making room for punky tempos and fiddle solos — to venues across the country\, where their sound grew to encompass the sweep of rock & roll\, the sonics of folk music\, and the storytelling of country. \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Music: Heathen Apostles
DESCRIPTION:Born of the voices of past lives and baptized in the dust bowl dirt\, the Gothic Americana music of the Heathen Apostles harkens back to a bygone chapter of American history. Using contrasting influences such as Bauhaus\, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and The Pogues along with Howlin’ Wolf\, Loretta Lynn (the band covers her classic Fist City) and Bessie Smith\, the Heathen Apostles have created a style of music that at once conjurs both angels and demons\, and will enlighten a darkened soul. \nCrossing paths at a gathering one Indian summer evening\, femme fatale bellower Mather Louth (Radio Noir) and rock n roll veteran Chopper Franklin (The Cramps\, Mau Maus\, Nick Curran & the Lowlifes) quickly uncovered a mutual appreciation for murder balladry\, Americana\, and memento mori. It was not long before a collaboration that sought to marry these interests in a sonic landscape\, the Heathen Apostles\, surfaced. The landscape was further tilled with the addition of Luis Mascaro on violin. \nTheir 7 albums – Boot Hill Hymnal (2013)\, Fire to the Fuse (2015)\, Requiem For a Remix (2016)\, Bloodgrass Vol. 1 & 2 (2018)\, Dust To Dust (2019) Bloodgrass Vol. 3 & 4 (2022) and The In Between (2024) – along with their many EPs and singles (their release The Fall was named Best EP of 2018 by Folk n Rock magazine)\, capture the essence of the Heathen Apostles modus operandi: Southern Gothic Americana imagery surrounded by haunting\, minor-chord melodies\, musical influences including Gothic Roots music\, Bluegrass\, Blues\, and Gypsy Jazz\, all deftly bound together by the band’s dark and sometimes brooding sense of a bygone age. \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Music: Dar Williams
DESCRIPTION:Dar Williams’ lyrics contain bouquets of optimism\, delivered on melodies alternating between beguiling lightness and understated gravity. \nWilliams strongly believes that all of us possess our own power and ability to achieve\, and she rejects the exceptionalism that encourages us to “admire that yonder star\,” while making us feel small and insignificant; unworthy of shining on our own but hoping to catch enough distant light to inspire some tiny accomplishment. Williams has always been very interested in how to control our future and this album has to do with the fact that at some point\, you just can’t. Like everyone else\, Williams spent 2020 in that state of non-control. \nShe and longtime producer Stewart Lerman tracked most of the album\, her 12th studio recording\, in November of 2019. In late February of 2020\, she cut the title tune in Woodstock with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell\, who produced the track and played guitars\, pedal steel and twangy baritone guitar. When told they had to postpone a mid-March mixing date\, Campbell said he wasn’t feeling well anyway. Turns out he’d contracted a serious case of COVID-19. That was a clear sign that at some point\, you have to meet life where it meets you …the common thread throughout that these songs\, the willingness to meet life as it arrives. \n  \n

Shindell has inhabited a Zen Buddhist monastery\, busked in the streets of Paris\, opened for Joan Baez (who covered several of his songs)\, and collaborated with Grammy-winner Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan\, Levon Helm\, Elvis Costello). \n  \nOriginally from New York\, now living in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures\, tell stories\, juxtapose ideas and images\, inhabit characters\, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be. Meticulously recorded over three years in New York and Buenos Aires\, his most recent release\, Careless\, offered an ambitious\, luxurious\, full-length statement. Shindell immersed himself in the studio\, allowing the time and latitude to explore\, experiment\, take risks—to play—as each of these eleven songs was given form and substance. While his signature acoustic guitar style is used to good effect\, Careless also found Shindell plugging in more. “The wider sonic and dynamic range of the electric has been a real inspiration. Rejuvenating.” \n  \nDuring the pandemic\, Shindell stayed in Argentina\, out on the wide open Pampa\, reading\, writing\, taking walks\, doing a little experimental recording\, and tending the garden. He now returns to the road for a limited number of performances. \n  \nInnovative\, original and occasionally spiritual\, Shindell’s songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden\, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to society’s fringes. From lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs\, to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics\, prejudice\, war and religion\, to the comic point-of-view of a cow stuck in a barbed wire fence\, he has a unique ability to morph into the soul of the many and varied personalities he casts as narrators in certain songs—veritable novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies. \n  \n“Occasionally an artist has a night that makes even skeptics think\, “O.K.\, maybe he is the best.” Richard Shindell achieved this.” — Ann Powers\, NY Times
