SUMMARY:Jazz: Liam Brennan's Abacus
DESCRIPTION:Composer Liam Brennan last presented Abacus at the club in 2023\, and returns as part of a short tour to promote their new album\, which was recorded live in the same year. The band features some of the finest players from the Birmingham and London scenes\, and on this occasion includes our own Nick Malcolm on trumpet\, standing in for regular trumpeter James Borland. \nFormed in 2022\, the project concept was heavily influenced by Omer Avital’s Asking No Permission which featured a 4-horn frontline. The music aims to combine concepts from both the jazz small group tradition as well as the big band lineage \nLiam draws influences from composers John Hollenbeck and John Taylor\, as well as Charles Mingus and Oliver Nelson. He is currently studying a masters in composition and improvisation in Gothenburg\, Sweden with an Erasmus project in Oslo\, Norway. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Jazz: Andy Hague Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Trumpeter Andy Hague returns with his quintet to close off the club’s 25/26 season. The music will be a mixture of tunes from quintet album Coming of Age [2018]\, Andy’s 2021 quartet album Release and a few tunes from other current jazz composers. \n“So impressed with this record\, wow\, it’s current\, it’s hip” – Linley Hamilton\, BBC Radio Ulster’s Jazz World. “it’s the variety of the musical structures deployed\, as well as the sheer spirit and fire in these performances that makes this a significant milestone for Hague and his chums” – Peter Vacher\, four star review in Jazzwise March 2019. \nWell known in Bristol’s jazz scene\, in 2019 Andy Hague played for the first time with legendary UK jazz composer Mike Westbrook as part of his Uncommon Orchestra\, and post-Covid the band has appeared at Cheltenham and Cambridge Jazz Festivals\, the Rossini Festival in Lugo\, Italy and Ronnie Scott’s 2022 and 2023. \nLong term associate saxophonist Ben Waghorn is a versatile musician who has worked in London’s West End and on many pop\, TV and film recordings. He has been involved in a range of projects with Keith Tippett\, including ‘Tapestry’\, a piece written by Keith for two saxophone quartets and the BBC singers\, the quartet ‘Work in Progress’ and The Keith Tippett Octet. He can also be heard on recordings with Geoff Eales and Dave Stapleton [Slowly Rolling Camera]. Ben has also recently performed with the BBC Big Band and played in Singapore with the London Concert Orchestra. Pianist Jim Blomfield has been a vital part of Bristol’s jazz scene for many years and has accompanied many of the UK’s best known players. He has released two trio CDs of his own compositions. “Jim Blomfield is the best British pianist you’ve never heard of and is an absolute marvel” – Independent on Sunday. Bassist Riaan Vosloo works regularly with saxophonist Ed Jones and runs the post-grad programme at BIMM Bristol music college. Drummer Mark Whitlam is head of the drum department at BIMM college and has played with big names such as Andy Sheppard and Iain Ballamy besides composing for his own projects. \n \n

SUMMARY:Sophie Moore
DESCRIPTION:UK-based singer-songwriter Sophie Moore has recently made her welcome return to the music scene\, bringing with her a unique brand of alternative country\, brought to life with former members of Nashville-based Lambchop. \n“What a breath of fresh air. You continue to give voice to simple truths. It’s got so much heart\,” former Lambchop pianist Tony Crow shares. \nDuring her musical journey\, in the 1980s\, Sophie Moore toured internationally as part of the London indie group Foggy Cry. She went on to support the likes of Labi Siffre during her solo career whilst also collaborating on a range of other artist’s projects including releasing tracks on Okra Records in the USA in the early 1990s with Jeb Loy Nichols. \nCapturing her sound in the studio\, her well-received single “Closer Than” presented the first taste of her upcoming album Trouble In Mind. Now\, with intimate live shows\, she’s offering a rare opportunity to hear the new material performed live with musicians from the US recording sessions. \nJoined by Houston bassist Mark Riddell and from Nashville\, Tony Crow\, these world class musicians form a transatlantic ensemble that’s set to perform a limited number of  UK  tour dates in June 2026. \nPraise for her first single: \n“A stellar showcase of Sophie Moore’s songwriting talent and performance panache.”\n— Plastic Magazine \n“Closer Than” embodies that powerful message alongside a stirringly melodic production and consuming vocal presence.”\n— Obscure Sound

SUMMARY:Music: Rose's Pawn Shop
DESCRIPTION:American roots music from Southern California live in Bristol \nRose’s Pawn Shop are a 5-piece band with acoustic\, folkie Americana roots and a rock n’ roll vibe. \nFor two decades\, they have evolved their version of modern-day American roots music. It’s an anthemic sound that’s taken the group from their hometown of Los Angeles — where frontman Paul Givant formed the band as a bluegrass-inspired act\, making room for punky tempos and fiddle solos — to venues across the country\, where their sound grew to encompass the sweep of rock & roll\, the sonics of folk music\, and the storytelling of country. \n“Our music is a patchwork of American styles\,” Givant says. “We have country\, rock\, bluegrass\, and folk — all sorts of American musical influences\, and they all go into the Rose’s Pawn Shop sound. \n““American Seams” is a masterclass in resilient roots music. It is a song for the seekers\, the travelers\, and anyone trying to navigate the complexities of modern life without losing their connection to the past.” – Country Music News International \n  \nLearn more about Rose’s Pawn Shop here: Rose’s Pawn Shop  \n  \n\n  \n\nExclusive offer for all Hen & Chicken event ticket holders – July 2026.\n\n25% off your food bill when you reserve a table in our  bar /restaurant\nWhen you book a table and enjoy dinner in our restaurant\, we reserve great seats for you\, ready for the performance\, so you can skip the queue and relax while enjoying your meal. \n\nPlease make your dinner reservation under the same name you used to book your tickets. \n\n*Does not include a ticket to your chosen event.
