DESCRIPTION:An evening with American song writing legends\, Peter Case and Sid Griffin. \nPeter Case is a three time Grammy nominated singer-songwriter from the USA who has a most impressive resume. He was the founder of the Nerves\, the very first American indie band to put together a nationwide tour and one of the very first to release their own indie EP. He then was the founder and leader of the legendary Plimsouls\, an incredibly influential L.A. rock and roll band which drew praise from everyone from Elvis Costello to Tom Petty to critics nationwide. \nFor the past thirty-some years Peter Case has been a solo troubadour in the great tradition of Dylan\, Guthrie\, and Pete Seeger. Early on he was produced by T-Bone Burnett and he’s played with and been championed by Roger McGuinn\, Van Dyke Parks\, Mike Campbell of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers and many more. His latest album is The Midnight Broadcast and it just might be his very best album. \nSid Griffin is best known by his leadership of the Long Ryders\, the founding fathers of alt-country and Americana. He is also the proud artist behind four well-received solo albums\, was the leader of the wonderful ‘alt-bluegrass’ UK band\, The Coal Porters\, he was the Resident Musicologist on BBC 6 Music’s Radcliffe & Maconie radio show for over a decade and Sid has written four books. Sid’s most recent book\, Million Dollar Bash: Bob Dylan\, The Band\, and the Basement Tapes\, has been reissued twice and Sid did the liner notes for that collection of legendary Dylan tracks.

DESCRIPTION:A natural storyteller\, Ben de la Cour’s visceral songwriting grabs you by the heart and doesn’t let go. Weaving evocative stories of desperate characters with his signature “Americanoir” sound\, de la Cour shines a glaring light on the human condition. \n  \nHis latest release\, New Roses\, received “★★★★”  from MOJO and was named Album of the Month. While Ben’s previous album Sweet Anhedonia felt like ”the American heartland witnessed through the window of a car going 80mph” (American Songwriter)\, New Roses feels like being stuffed into the trunk and driven into an imploding star. The record is a singular and personal vision\, with de la Cour playing nearly every instrument and delivering his strongest vocal performance yet. The result is a razor-sharp album full of what he calls “night songs”— haunting\, impactful songs that feel like the witching hour. In a collection of songs filled with juxtaposition and duality\, de la Cour balances doom and optimism\, seeking out kernels of hope in the darkness. \n  \nWhile much has been written of the darkness that permeates de la Cour’s music\, he finds this emphasis exaggerated: “It is an optimistic record\,” he says of New Roses. “You can’t be hopeful if you’re not willing to acknowledge the spectrum of the human condition. DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome back singer-songwriter Juliet Lloyd for an intimate performance in The Chicken Shed.\n\nAfter a decade-long hiatus\, Juliet Lloyd returned to music in 2020 and Carnival (2024) was her fouth album – it reflects her folk-rooted storytelling with pop sensibilities and melodies. \nJuliet Lloyd is an acclaimed singer/songwriter who splits her time between the DC region and Nashville and has garnered comparisons to Brandi Carlile\, Aimee Mann\, and Tori Amos for her signature blend of soulful\, roots-infused folk/pop. Across her 20-year career as a writer and artist\, Juliet has released four studio albums\, garnering placements on television shows on MTV and VH1 and airplay on more than 175 radio stations across the country. Her 2024 full-length album Carnival has been hailed by reviewers for its “evocative storytelling and raw honesty” and “powerfully emotive performance from start to finish.” It features nine songs that “movingly and poetically tell of broken hearts and loneliness yet finds brightness in its melodies and in the luster of Lloyd’s voice.” Juliet’s songwriting and performance chops have earned her top honors in the 2022 Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Awards and Mid-Atlantic Song Contest\, four “Wammie” finalist nods\, and multiple prestigious national songwriter awards across the past several years. DESCRIPTION:Born of the voices of past lives and baptized in the dust bowl dirt\, the Gothic Americana music of the Heathen Apostles harkens back to a bygone chapter of American history. Using contrasting influences such as Bauhaus\, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and The Pogues along with Howlin’ Wolf\, Loretta Lynn (the band covers her classic Fist City) and Bessie Smith\, the Heathen Apostles have created a style of music that at once conjurs both angels and demons\, and will enlighten a darkened soul. \nCrossing paths at a gathering one Indian summer evening\, femme fatale bellower Mather Louth (Radio Noir) and rock n roll veteran Chopper Franklin (The Cramps\, Mau Maus\, Nick Curran & the Lowlifes) quickly uncovered a mutual appreciation for murder balladry\, Americana\, and memento mori. It was not long before a collaboration that sought to marry these interests in a sonic landscape\, the Heathen Apostles\, surfaced. DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter Joe Martin\, returns to the Hen & Chicken this September. \n21st century troubadour Joe Martin is deservedly gaining attention on both sides of the Atlantic seeing him play shows around the UK\, Europe and legendary venues in Nashville\, Tennessee. \nHis musical journey has seen him collaborate with some of Nashville’s top songwriters including Johnny Garcia of Garth Brooks’ band\, hit writer Jill Collucci and Aaron Raitiere at RCA studios on Music Row. \nHis sound is deeply rooted in the classic American style\, drawing inspiration from a wide range of influences from American folk artists like Simon and Garfunkel\, Bob Dylan and James Taylor to\nsongwriters such as Townes Van Zandt\, Jason Isbell and Kacey Musgraves\, with storytelling and lyric a main focus of Joe’s songwriting. \nHis latest album Alone In Valentine was recorded in Nashville with Cal Campbell and Cornelius Webb\, sons of the music legends Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb. In Joe’s words\, the album is to serve as musical bridge between generations. DESCRIPTION:Dar Williams’ lyrics contain bouquets of optimism\, delivered on melodies alternating between beguiling lightness and understated gravity. \nWilliams strongly believes that all of us possess our own power and ability to achieve\, and she rejects the exceptionalism that encourages us to “admire that yonder star\,” while making us feel small and insignificant; unworthy of shining on our own but hoping to catch enough distant light to inspire some tiny accomplishment. Williams has always been very interested in how to control our future and this album has to do with the fact that at some point\, you just can’t. Like everyone else\, Williams spent 2020 in that state of non-control. \nShe and longtime producer Stewart Lerman tracked most of the album\, her 12th studio recording\, in November of 2019. In late February of 2020\, she cut the title tune in Woodstock with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell\, who produced the track and played guitars\, pedal steel and twangy baritone guitar. When told they had to postpone a mid-March mixing date\, Campbell said he wasn’t feeling well anyway. Turns out he’d contracted a serious case of COVID-19. That was a clear sign that at some point\, you have to meet life where it meets you …the common thread throughout that these songs\, the willingness to meet life as it arrives. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Richard Shindell lives as both an immigrant and emigrant\, crossing thresholds\, that informs his illumination of the human experience through narrative song. Shindell has inhabited a Zen Buddhist monastery\, busked in the streets of Paris\, opened for Joan Baez (who covered several of his songs)\, and collaborated with Grammy-winner Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan\, Levon Helm\, Elvis Costello). \n  \nOriginally from New York\, now living in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures\, tell stories\, juxtapose ideas and images\, inhabit characters\, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be. Meticulously recorded over three years in New York and Buenos Aires\, his most recent release\, Careless\, offered an ambitious\, luxurious\, full-length statement. Shindell immersed himself in the studio\, allowing the time and latitude to explore\, experiment\, take risks—to play—as each of these eleven songs was given form and substance. While his signature acoustic guitar style is used to good effect\, Careless also found Shindell plugging in more. “The wider sonic and dynamic range of the electric has been a real inspiration. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Angel back to the intimate surroundings of the Hen & Chicken Studio\, with her hypnotic delivery and spellbinding style\, for a trio performance\, including guitarist Joe Wilkins and on drums\, Matt Stockham-Brown. \nAngel Snow has just completed a successful 14-date UK tour promoting her most recent release – a Tom Waits tribute album titled Yesterday Is Here. Snow’s catalogue spans four full-length records over the course of 15 years and eludes quick and easy categorisation. \nResisting all attempts to pigeonhole her style as ‘Americana’\, Snow leaned heavily on her early teenaged electronic influences for her sophomore effort\, choosing to work with UK-based producer Lee Groves (Trent Reznor). The result was Magnetic – a collection of lush\, ambient\, electronic-driven songs that landed her a record deal with indie powerhouse Nettwerk Records. Magnetic would go on to receive critical praise worldwide and deliver the viral underground hit ‘Secret.’ \nSnow remained with Nettwerk for two follow-up EPs Arrows and Arrows (Stripped)\, produced by Ben Cramer\, aka Old Sea Brigade. Once again\, Arrows delivered an under-the-radar indie viral hit after the K-pop phenom boy band BTS singer “V” included the song “Hotel Rosario” on his personal Spotify Favourites playlist\, which notably only contained five songs. \nWith the music industry grinding to a halt in 2020\, Snow continued focusing on writing\, turning to Los Angeles producer Jonathan Stein (aka Charles Jacques) for her next full-length album Low. With Stein at the helm\, Snow delivered a Covid-inspired collection of songs heavily weighted by the themes of loss\, claustrophobia\, and re-imagined trauma. \nMost notable is Snow’s starkly beautiful cover of Peter Gabriel’s ominous environmentalist warnings in “Here Comes the Flood.” Snow chose the song as a metaphor for the emotional surge arising when faced with intense loss. The entire record is punctuated by Stein’s virtuosic skills as a multi-instrumentalist. \n
